From the intersection of 101 and 169 in Pomfret Center, travel north on 169 about 1/4 mile take a right onto Day Rd. Go .2 of a mile and pull into the driveway with a sign saying Trail Parking. Go down and park in the grass. You will see a white sign stating No vehicles past this point.

Walk past that sign down the dirt road. Soon there will be a stream that crosses the road. Cross the stream on the left side. Notice Day Brook Dam on the left. When you get to the end of the Dam, take the trail that goes in the woods on the right. Keep your eye out for a stonewall on your left. Soon after that you will come to a tree leaning over the path. Look to your left to see a small pine tree. Just behind that up the hill is a bigger pine tree. Go behind the tree to find the box. About 15 minutes

From the West on Rte. 44 or from the East on 101 turn onto 169 north. Go about 1/4 mile up and take a right onto Day Rd. Go to the end of Day Rd. And at the stop sign take a right onto Needles Eye Rd. Go to another stop sign and turn left. You are now on Wrights Crossing Rd.

From this stop sign you will travel 1.1 miles and on the right side you will see a pull off area with a sign saying Wyndham Land Trust Nature Sanctuary. Park here. There will also be another sign stating Overlook with an arrow pointing to the right, and Duck Blind with an arrow pointing to the left. You need to go to the Duck Blind. To do so you will have to walk about 100 paces down the road to a silver gate on the right. Go around the gate and follow the grassy path until you come to a Y, take the trail on the left and there in front of you will be the Duck Blind. Standing in front of it, go to the right and look for a tree with a pile of rocks and dead wood on top. About 10 minutes

Putnam

From Route 44 you want to take Quinebaug Ave., this will be a left turn before the Hospital if you’re heading West and a right turn after the Hospital heading East. Quinebaug Ave. Turns into River Rd. A little ways down. From Rte 44 you want to drive 1 ½ miles. You will then see a yellow sign the indicates a sharp Z turn in the road.

Right after the corner you will see down below the road on your right the old Airline Trail..
Just after you see this there is room for a couple of cars to park on the right.

Park and head back over towards the trail. Follow the path that runs into the woods above the old rail bed. Shortly this path will take you down a small hill. It turns towards the left and you will pass by some rocky ledges on your left. Right after this you see the remains of an old campfire and another trail on your left. Look to the left and find your box behind the tree with the big mouth!

Continue down the main trail and you will notice that you are very high up. Notice the stone wall below you on the right that zig zags along. Be very careful along this trail! You will walk over a flat piece of concrete/rock, continue on. There will be a field on your left. When you get to the point where the brook down below on the right makes a sharp turn you will see a 3 sister tree on the edge of the trail above the bend in the brook. Go 72 feet from here and find your box behind a cut piece of wood on the left.

These two boxes are on the same trail as the Signs of Autumn Series
About 1 hour to do them all (7)

In Pomfret where Rte 44 and 101 merge the is a road on the right coming from 44 Ashford way or on the left if coming up 101. This road has a brown sign at the end that says Wolf Den Field Camping. Go up this road approx. 6/10 of a mile and pull into the Field Camping Area on the left. Go into the parking lot at the ranger station. Get out of the car and walk to the back of the parking lot and stand at the end of the fence on the left and take a reading of 184* Take the trail up the hill, VERY muddy here! You will come to a white post and the trail turns into the woods towards the left. Follow this to the stone wall and go through the wall. Turn left 18 feet and look in the stones.

Continue on up the hill and you will come to a second stone wall. This time go 10 feet to your left and look in the stones.

Turn around and follow the trail back to your car.

About 15-20 minutes

From the sign enter the grassy trail and walk along the edge of the field. You will enter a wooded section marked with dark blue blazes. Look for the “Shagbark Hickory”. From there look all around (within 7 steps) Reach from the top, be careful of the bottom

From Rte. 101 go north on 169 about 3/10 of a mile and park near the red barn on the right. Coming down Rte. 44 from Putnam the red barn is about 2 1/4 miles from the intersection of 44, 197, 169 just a short distance from the really bad S curve.

Park on the grass and then cross over 169 to the other side. Walk through the stonewall and across the field to the edge of the woods. Turn right and follow the tree line, it gets a little muddy here. You will soon see a huge 3 sister tree on your left. Walk about 138 feet past this tree and you will see a path going into the woods, turn in here. Quickly on your left there are some fallen trees. Look near the moss covered piece for your box.

About 15 minutes

Go about 3/10 of a mile north from the red barn on 169 and just before the bad S curve you will see a sandy pulloff on the right. Park here. Go up the small hill and through the green gate. Follow the Rail Trail until you see a trail map on a tree to the left. There is a path leading down on the left. Very carefully (might be wet and possibly slippery) go down this path holding the rope as you go. Go past the HUGE 4 sister tree on the right (this spot was a great hiding place but there’s poison ivy growing every where!) At the T in the trail go left. Go about 40 feet just to where the trail goes down again. Don’t go down, turn to your left and look under the tree about 8-10 feet off the trail. Go back up to the main Rail Trail the way you came down. At the top head back the way you came. Just before reaching your car you will see two rock very close to each other either to your right or left. Look down between these two rocks and find your box. Please re-hide WELL!

These two boxes will take a little longer, maybe 20 - 25 minutes

Please contact me directly at mommafox@snet.net about these boxes.
