10/04/2008 Box is alive and well
This letterbox is on a local mountain that is a popular destination for hikers. The mountain is named for a mineral that is abundant in the area.
The hike is approximately 4 miles roundtrip. Wear a hat. Take sunscreen, LOTS of water, and a snack to enjoy at the Ramona Overlook. We were glad to have sturdy hiking sticks with us.
Directions:
The trailhead is at the intersection of Hwy 67 and Poway Road. There is limited roadside parking. A porta potty is near the trailhead.
Clues:
Follow the Iron Mountain Trail east for 1 1/2 miles. When you reach the trail sign for the Ramona Overlook Trail, turn left and follow the trail towards the Overlook. The sign says it is .5 mile. It felt more like 5 miles at times.
Go up then down and down again. Then go up, up, and up some more. Finally you will reach a T intersection with two vertical posts in front of you. Go to the second post. Turn right (east) and walk 6 steps. Look under the rock cairn between two small boulders for the Ramona Road Runner.
Please rehide carefully. The letterbox is close to the very busy trail.
