Before I give directions let me warn you of things. First, there are things you need to know before starting out on this journey because at some point after finding the jurneez Crescent Moon letterbox, you will be addressed with some decisions to make. They will be mentioned in the directions, but please give thought with regard to the time of year you do this trek.

Directions: From Willimantic, CT take Rt. 14 from Rt. 66, (by Tony’s Pizza). Follow signs staying on Rt. 14, travel 4.7m to Bass Rd. on right. Follow Bass Rd. to the “T” intersection and turn left, that’s still Bass Rd., Go .3m to the entrance of the Wildlife Area at the gravel road on the right opposite a cemetery on the left. There is parking as soon as you turn in, before a steel gate.

Directions: From the west side. Get to Rt. 14 and Rt. 97 in Scotland, travel Rt. 97 south. Travel about .2m or so and turn right onto Gager Hill Rd. After turning travel without turning off at all, pass other end of Bass Rd. on left, but you stay straight until you see cemetery on right and gravel road entrance on left. Turn in and park at steel gate.

From Gate: Walk down dirt road, you’ll see old electric lines / poles on the right (2003-some have fallen down now). An old fallen down chicken coop on the left(2003 also fallen down). Further up, you’ll see an old garage / house on the right on a bend (same - fallen) but wanted you to know there had been an old homestead here. Follow the bend. Walk until you see some square cut beams (presently 2 of them) on the left side of trail crossing a trickle of water. Cross over. At fork bear left. Follow trail with Merrick Brook on your left. Pass State sign about Merrick Brook and Habitat Restoration. Follow trail. Stay straight. Cross little stream on stepping stones. Pass next trail intersection and remain left (straight). Go left again at next trail intersection. Ridge is on top on right. Trail winds and goes uphill & then heads downhill.

There’s a steep ravine on the right going downhill. Look for an outcrop of rocks on your left about 60 feet in off trail and about 45 degrees up. You can see this all year long from the trail. Go off path to outcrop. Be careful and watch for snakes. Look in the middle under rocks. The Crescent Moon is there! While you’re there take a look at the mysterious circle of rocks. Looks like an old Indian fireplace in the ledge. I swear I didn’t put them there. I never even touched it as not to disturb it. Looks like a small animal sleeps in the center. Please don’t disturb it though!

NOW you have choices to make regarding your trip back.

A. Backtrack – which means uphill (yuk)

B. Follow path downward to “T” in path (2003 - a rather busy overgrown section, path hard to find), turn left and (hearing the brook is a good thing), follow to Merrick Brook, take off shoes and socks, cross brook, turn left & follow path again. It swings towards the right a little. It winds and gets smaller like a footpath (deer run) but it’s actually the old road. This brings you Merrick Brook again. Look across the brook, in some seasons you’ll see the roof top where you started (2003, fallen or removed?). Repeat, take off shoes and socks, cross brook, after crossing, during wet seasons just head left about 10 feet or so there's a small land bridge, but you have to jump a little. Head straight up the 10 foot bank on the other side, pass old dump stuff, like bottles, tractor seats, etc. (still there), follow path a short distance through beautiful small field (2003 overgrown scrub) and you’re back at the house / coop area. (also fallen)

C. Information you should know: At both brook crossings there is a tree about 100 yards to the left as you stand looking at the brook. This tree is do-a-ble to cross if you have good balance, but this doesn’t mean after hard wash outs the trees will still be there. AND if you’re traveling with a pet they will have difficulty navigating the tree to other side. My dog & I just plowed right in during February. I won’t say it wasn’t cold but it was exhilarating. (July 2003, seemed just as cold).

GOOD LUCK!
