History:
During The Panic of 1873, Crushing financial crisis and nationwide depression caused railroad construction to come to a halt. Texas and Pacific Railroad stopped laying tracks 30 miles from Fort Worth's boundaries. The population dwindled rapidly, mercantile and homes were abandoned, the grass literally grew in the streets. A Dallas Times Herald story written by Robert E. Cowart characterized Fort Worth as "a town so sleepy that he once saw a panther napping on the steps of the courthouse". Cowart's jab was turned to the city's advantage adopting "Panther City" as its nickname. Two beautiful panther sculptures can be seen in downtown Fort Worth (one atop a fountain at 9th and Throckmorton). This letterbox is dedicated to "The Sleeping Panther of Fort Worth" by Daran Wright, which sits on the lawn of the Tarrant County Administration Building on Main Street.

UPDATE:
This box has apparently fallen down inside the hollow tree in which it was hidden. There it will remain until the tree blows down, gets chopped by the Parks Department, or some very brave letterboxer decides to fish it out.

This box is located in Buffalo Ridge Park, in Haltom City, Mapsco 50B. There are a couple of entrances to this park. You need to find the entrance off of Beach Street, just North of Fossil Creek Blvd, South of Silver Sage. Park in the parking lot and start down the concrete path. When you cross over a drainage pipe, start counting concrete squares. When you reach the 8th square, turn left into the woods. Walk 33 steps. There will be a dead multi-trunked tree on your left. It looks as if it were partially burned. The box is hidden in a large hollow branch of the tree, covered with broken logs and leaves. Please re-cover well.
