This is a beautiful easy walk up a canyon in the Columbia River Gorge along a clear creek that was filled with hundreds of Spawning salmon when the letterbox was placed in early october. See if you can find the petrified tree stump that stands right at the side of the trail. Drive east from Portland on I-84. stop in at Multnomah Falls and enjoy the thunderous view. Eat breakfast at the lodge which is an underused treasure. Continue on until you reach Eagle Creek Parking Lot. Walk up the creek along the road until you come to Wahtum Lake trail#440. You will pass a footbridge to your right which crosses the creek. Look for the rock outcropping approximately 200 yards from the bridge. That is your indication you are on course. After the outcropping see if you can find the petrified tree stump next to the trail. It is on the left side of the trail across the creek from a cedar grove. It is imbedded in the side of the hill right on the trail. Look but don't take samples so that this undiscovered treasure can be there for you children. You will cross a wooden platform built into the trail. Approximately 120 paces past the wooden platfrom you will find a multipronged tree stump on the right side of the trail. Another 25 paces puts you at the letter box. Look off the right side of the trail to the boulder below. under the rock pile on top of the boulder you will find the box. Sign in, Stop and enjoy the majic of the area and if you are up for some excercise continue up the trail to the punch bowl a magnificent natural formation in the creek.
