NOTE: If you have difficulties with these clues, we're always happy to discuss your theories!

BACKGROUND:
"They seek him here, they seek him there
Those Frenchies seek him everywhere.
Is he in Heaven? Is he in Hell?
That demmed elusive Pimpernel!"

The year is 1792. The French Revolution has turned into a Reign of Terror, driven to bloody excess by its own victories. From morning til night, tumbrils roll over the cobbled streets of Paris bearing new victims to the insatiable blade of Madame Guillotine.
One man dares to defy her.

The Baroness Orczy wrote this first adventure about a hero with a secret identity in 1901. She is credited with having launched a genre which includes Batman, Superman, Indiana Jones and Zorro. Not bad for a Hungarian émigré forced to write in her third language – English.

And of course, any elusive character that can slip in and out of view leaving only a mysterious signature stamp behind is fair game for a mystery letterbox...
