The story might start in 1848 when George W. Armitage came to Oregon from California. He operated the first ferry across the McKenzie River and now there is an Armitage County Park in the area. A large park: Armitage has picnic areas and shelters, game areas, a dog run, a boat ramp, group sites, water, rest rooms, and several trails--one of which is the Crilly Trail. This is a fee area from May through September, but is open year round. The Crilly Nature Trail is a half mile, self-guided trail. A brochure is sometimes available at the trail's start and generally is available at the park office. It guides hikers through the eleven viewing stations along the trail.

First-Things-First, so start by finding the park. In Eugene, find and go North on Coburg Road until you locate the park entrance on the left and just before the McKenzie River. Drive through the park, keeping to the right on the main road. You'll need to stop about 100 yards before the boat ramp and park on the right side by a bulletin board which marks the trail's start.

We checked the box on 5/10/2008 and found it in good shape and being used.

Check your stamp, ink pad, and pen before you start. A compass is required, and we hope you were able to get a trail brochure. To locate the box, follow the trail to viewing station 10. From that post, go at 60 degrees magnetic to a tree. From there, locate a forked tree at 218 degrees magnetic. The box is on the ground behind that tree and under a log.

Good Luck!! Please let us know if there are problems with the directions or the box.
