WARNING: I've been told that someone left peanut butter crackers in this box, so if you or your child is peanut allergic, be aware that there may be trace contaminants still there (unless, of course, the wildlife on the trail destroys the box first searching for peanut butter!). I'll try to reolace this box ASAP and remove this warning. And please, finders, NEVER leave food of any kind in a letterbox. It invites the animals and bacteria and can be nasty if left out there in the wild for awhile!

White Sail

Planted by Viewfinder.

Difficulty: moderate
Distance: approximately 1 mile on dirt hike/bike trail through woods and along ledge above lakeshore – be alert for bikes! NOT handicapped-accessible, not stroller-friendly. The view is beautiful from this place!

Rockledge Park is on the north shore of Lake Grapevine. Between the City of Grapevine and Grapevine Mills Mall, turn on Fairway Drive, cross the dam and the entrance to the park is immediately past the spillway. Follow the entrance drive around to the far west parking lot. You will see the Gaylord Texan Hotel directly across the lake. The North Shore Trail begins at this parking area and goes for 8 miles along the north shore of the lake, in and out of woods of juniper and cedar, oak and cedar elm, redbud and other hardwoods, and wild grapevine (from which the city of Grapevine got its name). It is a dirt trail, very heavily biked, especially on weekends, so be alert and ready to give right of way to bikes!

Begin at the trail sign and follow the trail along the ridge above the lakeshore, enjoying the view across Lake Grapevine, sailboats, great blue herons skimming the water and people picnicking, fishing, and boating. The trail continues along a ledge above the lakeshore and then diverges; follow the arrows to the right, always keeping to the right at intersections, as you wander above the lake and through the woods. Eventually, after about a mile, you’ll come to a T-intersection. To the right you can see a long wooden bridge a few feet away. Turn left at this intersection – do not cross the bridge, and continue to follow the trail a few yards more, and look for a bench overlooking the lake up above the trail to your right.

Sit on the bench and rest awhile, looking out over the blue water. I’ll bet you see white sails skimming the lake, and probably gray and white herons also. Now look to your right and see a small path leading between the trees. Beginning at the right end of the bench, follow this path about 12 steps and stop at the last cedar tree on your left just as you reach a small clearing. Hidden within the branches of this tree about one foot off the ground is the White Sail letterbox.

Please reseal the bags well and rehide the box carefully!
