The Heublein Tower Letterbox was placed by TJ and his friends Lance and Cora-Lisa, and their moms, Emily and Deb, on a beautiful fall day.

The letterbox is located in Talcott Mountain State Park. The park is located on Route 185, west of Route 278 and east of Route 10, between Bloomfield and Simsbury. Parking is available on the access road off of 185.

To get to the letterbox, proceed up the Tower Trail, which is1.25 miles long; and takes approximately 30 - 40 minutes. Once you reach the tower, continue until you reach the Picnic Pavilion. From the steps of the Pavilion head south on the trail leading away from the pavilion and the tower (approximately 70 steps, as taken by Lance, TJ, and Cora-Lisa ages 6, 7 and 8 respectively). You will come to a large, low rock off the trail slightly to your right. From here, follow a mini trail that heads southwest off the main trail (approximately 20 steps). Here you will find a large rock outcrop shaded by a hemlock tree. Stand facing southwest (with the hemlock tree on your left). If you kneel down and reach underneath the rock, at about the place where the hemlock roots are visible, you will find the letterbox.

If you haven’t ever climbed the tower, you should schedule this hike between May and October, when the Friends of Heublein Tower keep the Observation Tower open for visitors. The panoramic views of the Hartford skyline and the Farmington River Valley are particularly spectacular each year in the fall.
