Catch The Wind

The first Bedford area school met in a log building during the early 1860's. After the civil war, classes were held in a frame structure north of the site of the original school. After it burned in the early 1880's, Milton Moore (1830-1914) deeded land for the construction of Bedford College, an elementary and high school academy. In 1893, it was also destroyed by fire and local citizens raised funds for a new elementary school nearby. In 1915, the two-story brick building was completed. The school consolidated with the Hurst-Euless District in 1958 and the building was used until 1969. The Old Bedford School has been lovingly restored and now houses a museum and is used for meetings, performances and even weddings.

The building is located at 2400 School Lane, off Bedford Rd. about a mile north of the Bedford Rd exit off Hwy. 121 (Airport Freeway).

After turning onto School Lane, park at the first available space on your left. After parking, you will see a small elevated garden to your left, and just beyond the garden is a dirt road with signs stating “Additional Parking”. Walk up this road toward the wonderful old windmill made by American West Windmills, Amarillo, Texas. Windmills have been an important part of the American landscape for many years. After pausing to enjoy the windmill, continue up the path and through the rail fence. After passing by the second stone light structure (one on your left, then one on your right), you will see a line of cedar trees on your left. Go to the first cedar in the line (next to a brick fence) and look behind it under a suspicious pile of rocks, There you will find “Catch the Wind” letterbox.

Note: This box was originally placed in Waxahachie as the first box in the "Celebration of the Texas Countryside" series, but only remained there for several days before being replaced by "Places In The Heart" letterbox. In it's short visit to the original location, it was found by our esteemed Grizzlyed Gryphon, but no one else had visited it.

While in the area, be sure to visit "Allie's Duck" located at the Bedford Boys Ranch Park, and "Duck, Duck, Goose!" located in Chisholm Park in Hurst.
