~On a gorgeous Saturday morning this fun series was placed. I hope you enjoy finding them as much as we enjoyed hiding them 8-)

There are NO INK PADS in any of the boxes and I VERY strongly recommend bringing makers for the best effect.
Also, there is only one log book and it is in the last box.

There is hunting in part of this preserve and a section of trail is closed from Nov 1st-Dec 31st and again for three weeks starting the first Wednesday in May. BE SURE TO WEAR BLAZE ORANGE DURING THESE TIMES ESPECIALLY. NO BOXES ARE PLACED ON THE CLOSED SECTION OF TRAIL.

Directions:

Coming from Salem on Route 82 make a left turn onto Route 156. Travel down to your first road on the right, which is Macintosh Road. Take this right and travel a short way down, crossing a bridge and then seeing a small (room for 2-3 cars) pull off/parking area on the right. Park here and begin your journey.

Clues:

After parking, face the road and look right. You will see a trail leading from the parking area up a hill to the left of the BIG rocks. Follow this path and you will come to a gate. Go through the gate and continue walking until you see a wooden arrow pointing right on a tree that is on the right. Take this right. Follow it until you come to the mapboard. If there are paper copies of the map please take one for your journey today. If not, it would be a wise choice to trace the permanent one on the back of your clue sheet.

After looking at the mapboard, take the trail to your right that goes uphill and is blazed blue/red.
Very quickly, red only goes right. You will need to head that way also.
After a short distance, you will see a white arrow pointing right that says River. DO NOT follow it, but instead, go left with red.
Soon you will come to a stone wall/enclosure on the right. Stop here. On the end closest to you, look in the opening.
There you will find Box #1 Underdog
"Have no fear, Underdog is here."

Continue on the red trail until you come to an intersection with blue on the right in a field.
Take this right and walk on blue across the field. As you enter the tree-line pass under the "elbow" of a Cedar tree. Shortly after that you will see a twin sister Oak tree on the right. Look behind this tree, under some rocks, for
Box #2 Snagglepuss
"Heavens to mergatroid."

Continue in the same direction on blue. You will cross over a bridge, go up a hill and end up in a field of Cedar. At this point you will need to look closely for the orange trail. It will be a right turn at a wooden "Entrance" sign. The orange discs are VERY hard to see and you have to look closely for them. Follow the orange trail back into the tree-line and you will notice a LARGE wolf tree off to the left. Quickly after that you will see a neat pile of rocks off to the right behind a fallen tree. Step over the tree and look in the back of the rock pile for Box #3 Jabberjaw.
"No respect."

Continue on the orange trail passing a stone wall that ends at a VERY LARGE rock on your right. When you come to the intersection of green, turn right. Follow green across the field, passing a nice bench along the way. Re-enter the tree-line and follow green until you come to the closed section of trail. There is a chain across the trail here and this is where you need to STOP. DO NOT CROSS THIS CHAIN. There are no boxes on the closed section of the trail at all. This section is, again, closed Nov.1st-Dec.31st and for three weeks in May starting with the first Wednesday.
Go left along this side of the stone wall for 20 steps and look under a rock that is next to the wall for
Box #4 Mumbly.
A mumbling, bumbling detective that always solves the case.

Now, turn around and head back down green the way that you came. When you come to a wonderful, craggy rock formation on the right with a Birch tree growing out of it, stop. Go to the top of this formation and look in a crevice under the rock that the Birch tree is growing out of for
Box #5 Donald Duck.
A loud mouth duck who oftens loses his temper.

Keep going on green until you again reach the field. Cross the field. When you get to the spot where the orange trail goes left, you will need to continue straight on the mostly unmarked green trail. This is the same direction that the wooden Entrance sign is pointing. When you reach an intersection with green, go right. You will cross over a bridge and then pass another Entrance sign on the left. Shortly after this you will pass a large rock on the right edge of the trail. Just a little further you will see an even bigger rock about 12 steps off the right side of the trail. This rock is next to a tree with a broken top. Go to this rock and look at its base, just to the left of the skinny Birch growing on the rock. There you will find
Box #6 Scooby Doo.
"Rut Ro."

Continue on green being careful to follow the blazes, especially where it bears left and goes uphill. Cross a bridge. After crossing, if you are lucky and the water level is up, you just may see a wonderful waterfall cascading down on your left. Keep going steadily uphill for quite a long spell. When you get to a spot that is somewhat level, finally, and rather brief, stop! Take a reading of 200 degrees. You should see some rocks there. Go to the top of these rocks and enjoy the overlook. This is NOT THE OVERLOOK that is listed on the map though. Notice that these rocks make a very small ampitheater. Go into it and face the taller rocks. Look well, high on the rock, in a crack, in front of a skinny Birch tree for
Box #7 Foghorn Leghorn.
"I say, I say..."
*If you come to a tumbled down stone wall on your left, you have gone too far.*

Continue on green, again going uphill. You will start seeing some whimsical cairns along the way. Pass a corner of a stone wall on the left and very soon you will be at the highest elevation of this trail and start heading downhill. Pass a large, split, flat rock on the left and come to a fanciful place with many cairns and a wonderful view. THIS IS THE OVERLOOK. Stop at the first slick rock that you walk on here and take a reading of 340 degrees. Walk 40 steps towards the rocks that are at that heading. When you get there, look to your right, under an overhang that is about three feet tall for Box #8 Huckleberry Hound.
"The biggest show in town is Huckleberry Hound
For all you guys and gals
The biggest clown in town is Huckleberry Hound
with all his cartoon pals.
It's Huckleberry fun, it's for everyone
So come on, gather 'round
Get yourself all set
Turn on your tv set
For Huckleberry Hound"

Now head back the way you came-DOWNHILL this time 8-)
Look for a very special tree just off the right side of the trail. It is very near the waterfall area. It is a tree of three growing out of a rock of two. You will know it when you see it. Stop here. Go to the tree and take a reading of 320 degrees. Take eight steps in this direction to a Birch tree that is standing on its tippy toes in front of a large rock. Look in the hole behind the tree and under the rock for Box #9 Porky Pig.
"Tha tha tha that's all folks."
This is the box with the log book in it. Please be sure to re-seal it well and place the rocks so that nothing happens to this box. Thanks

To get back to your vehicle, keep following green. Cross the bridge again. You will also need to bear right at two intersections. Each of them has wooden Entrance signs. Just follow the direction of the signs and you will reach the mapboard and then be able to walk back to your car.

We really hope you enjoyed this hike and the boxes. They were a lot of fun to create.
PLEASE remember to re-seal everything. All contents are double bagged to protect them. Please keep them that way. Thanks a lot.

Flutterby & Old Skool Vanz~

There are also some other wonderful boxes here that can be done at the same time. They are Pleasant Valley and THE RUNAWAY ROOSTER and THE NEWT.
