Welcome to a tour of the solar system. This is the first half of what will be nine letterboxes - the inner solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. This series was inspired by my and my son's love of astronomy. As a science teacher, I tried to make them educational by putting facts about each planet in the boxes. I also tried to make them fairly easy so they would be child-friendly. I hope an interest in space will be sparked in some young (or not-so-young) letterboxer!

Driving Directions:
These boxes are located in Slater Park in Pawtucket. There are two entrances to the park - one on Newport Avenue and one on Armistice Boulevard. Whichever entrance you choose, follow the road and the signs to Daggett Farm until you reach the playground. This is right next to Daggett Farm, which used to be the Slater Park Zoo, and where you can still see some animals, although Fanny the elephant no longer resides here. Park at the playground's parking lot, and if you brought your kids, let then enjoy it a while! It's been rebuilt to replace the splinter-riddled wooden structure and it's pretty nice - especially for kids who like climbing. Anyway . . . on to the clues.

Clues:
Mercury
Start facing the playground entrance. Follow around the playground to the left, the ground will quickly turn from paved to gravel/dirt. Shortly after this you’ll see a path on your left, take it. Go right at the end of this path. You’ll start to see piles of debris on your right, dirt, leaves, pieces of fence, wood shavings. At the fork, go right. Soon you’ll see three chain-link trees on the left. From here, go 17 paces (1 pace = 2 steps) further down the path. Spot a three-trunked tree on your left, and look for Mercury under its pile of sticks.

Venus
Keep going down the path, and go straight at the fork. Pass behind the old green bathrooms. Sorry, these are no longer functional. You should have gone before you left! Pass between two “balance beams” and head towards a third. Turn left here and go 19 paces at 130 degrees to a tree with many small trunks. Nestled inside you’ll find Venus. Be careful; this area could get a little soggy after rain or snow.

Earth (MISSING)
Go back up to the dirt path parallel to the road. Speaking of parallel, you’ll soon see a set of parallel bars on your left. Look across the street and spot a big rock. Behind it, under a couple of logs, you’ll find Earth.

Mars
Go back to the parallel bars and cut across the grass. Take a left at the street. Find a wooden bridge to the left and head for it. Cross the bridge and go up a little hill between two trees. Turn right as soon as you pass these trees and spot a path into the woods. Follow this path until you see a smaller path cut across yours. Go right here. You’ll pass by two fallen logs on your right. Go left at the next intersection, up a hill. Almost at the end of the path, look left for a pair of “victory” trees. Or are they a Martian’s antennae? Either way, Mars will be found between them.
