Lancaster Greenway
Difficulty: Clues-easy, Trail-easy
Time: 20 minutes, excluding stamping time

"I firmly believe, from what I have seen, that this is the chosen spot of all this earth as far as Nature is concerned." Luther Burbank, 1875

Background: Welcome to Lancaster, Massachusetts; the oldest town in Worcester County. Lancaster was founded in 1653 and recently celebrated its 350th anniversary. It is situated at the confluence of the north and south branches of the Nashua River. They join at the town's "Meeting of the Waters" to flow north to meet the Merrimack River in Nashua, NH. Lancaster is also the birthplace of noted horticulturalist Luther Burbank on March 7, 1849. In California his birthday is celebrated as Arbor Day, and trees are planted in his memory.

DIRECTIONS: From I-495 to Route 2 West or From I-190 to Route 2 East. Exit Route 2 at the Route 70 exit in Lancaster. Route 70 South 1.5 miles to the "dip."
At the bottom of the dip turn off to the right (west) into the Lancaster Greenway parking lot.

If you're already letterboxing in Bolton or Harvard, MA, your best route is west on Route 117 to 70 north. Take 70 north 1.7 miles to the "dip" where you'll find the entrance to the Greenway on your left (west).

CLUES: The Greenway parking area has a locked gate, so you’ll have to park on the highway. There’s room for 2 cars in front of the gate.
Enter the Lancaster Greenway on the trail bearing 320 degrees past the white steel gate. Follow the trail along the bank of the Nashua River.
Continue past the point where a trail joins from the left.
Stop at the point where the trail forks with one trail continuing straight ahead under power lines and another going uphill to the right before the power lines.
From the center of this intersection proceed toward the river on a bearing of 210 degrees for 27 steps to a tree with dual bumpy trunks.
Locate a steel reinforcing rod protruding from beneath that tree.
Concentrate your search several feet above that rod. (It’s a bit of a stretch.)
Retrace your steps to your car.
