In order to build houses on lots smaller than what was designated by law, the developer of the Eldorado subdivision was required to set aside undeveloped lands for the use of the homeowners. This letterbox has found a home along one of the many trails in the resulting “Eldorado Wilderness.” I was taken here by a friend who lives in the area but was assured that anyone who respects the land and does not harm the trails is welcome. Watch for wildlife!

To the trailhead: Head north from Santa Fe on I-25 to the Lamy/Clines Corners exit. At the bottom of the off ramp, take a left, passing under the highway. At the T turn right and go about two miles to Ojo de Vaca Road and turn right. After you cross the cattle guard, watch for the first parking area on your left, #2.

To the letterbox: You will find this box hidden along the colorful 201 trail, a two mile loop. The trail beneath your feet is a veritable rainbow: peach, russet, grey, brown, tan. When your footsteps tread upon snowy earth, stop. Look for four tall arboreal non-conformists. From the base of the tall one, living at the lowest point, take ten steps at 60 degrees magnetic. El Venado lives beside a hard hearted fellow with a distinctly greenish complexion. Look beneath a flat rock.
