Note: Boxes alive and well as of 3/29/07.
Work has begun on the powerline upgrade. Use caution passing through that section.
Three mile out and back hike or two and a quarter miles if you spot a second car at the other end of this section.
Hiking boots are recommended, as is a walking stick for coming back down the steep, slippery hill.
On the Quinnipiac Trail in Hamden.
Find the parking spot on the west side of West Woods Rd near the town line.
Ascend the steep slope. Enjoy the views from the top.
Continue about a half mile along the ridge.
About 100 steps before the abandoned cottage foundation there is a large boulder on the west side of the trail. Carefully navigate yourself to the back (west) side of the boulder.
Look for a small south-facing cave beneath the leaning snag for your nag. (MM#1)
Continue on through the laurel and past the radio tower. Another quarter mile will take you under the power lines. Keep going down past the big house on the left and over a couple of small streams. Notice a low stone wall off to your left. Shortly you will pass through the wall and into the hemlock grove where the wall will be on your right.
At the end of the hemlocks and just before crossing the grassy gas line R.O.W. the wall will meet up with the trail. Trot three steps in along the NE side of the wall to find your filly beneath the flat rock. (MM#2)
