Round Butte Dam, completed in 1964, is the largest hydroelectric dam wholly within the state of Oregon. The massive 1,380-foot-long rock-fill structure rises 440 feet from its bedrock foundation. It is about 2,500 feet thick at its base and 44 feet thick at the crest. Round Butte’s three generators produce enough electricity to power more than 96,500 homes.

To the Trailhead: From Culver follow the directional signs to The Cove Palisades State Park. Just before you begin to descend into the canyon, you will see Mountainview Road with a sign indicating Round Butte Dam. Turn right here and follow this road five miles to Overlook Park. Don’t miss the 90 degree turn to the left. (If you accidentally go straight here, the road will change names) The park is closed during the winter months but the box is accessible all year long. Park just outside, to the left of the entrance gate.

To the letterbox: Pass through the wire fence and follow the trail, taking a right at every Y until you come to the fence line. Follow it south to its end and continue in a southwesterly direction to the rim. Continue along the rim passing a couple of rocky promontories. Standing with a ferrous eye between your ankles, you will see a quarry at 340 and a tower at 60 degrees magnetic. The box is fourteen steps away at 200 degrees.
