Introduction:

The Monk Seal is the most endangered seal in the world. While visiting Kauai, we were lucky enough to see several of these charming creatures. One seal had hauled out, and was beginning to molt. Her fur looked green because of a year's worth of algae growth.

We also had the amazing fortune to swim with a monk seal. We took a charter boat to the "Forbidden Island" of Ni'ihau, and a seal joined us when we were snorkelling off the island of Lehua. We kept our distance, as this seal checked us out, and then swam to the bottom, to scratch on the sea floor. (That's the seal scratching, not us!)

If you do see a monk seal, give them lots of room and respect! These solitary creatures are under great stress, and their future is very uncertain.

Directions:

Take Highway 50 to Highway 520, which is Manuhia Road. At the town of Koloa, turn right at the stop sign, and immediately left at the gas station on Poipu Road. After a while, you'll come to a Y intersection. Take the left fork toward Poipu Beach (Spouting Horn and "Beach House" Beach are also worth checking out. We photographed this seal at "Beach House" Beach, which has very good snorkelling.) Follow the road to the end, and park.

Clues:

At this location, you may see sea turtles, monk seals, and humpback whales (in the winter).

From the parking area of Poipu Beach, locate the Koloa Heritage Trail sign declaring, "Aloha! It's Kauai's Spirit!"

Turn sharp left, staying on the grass. Pass water valves, and find the metal plaque for Annie's Place. Your right shoulder should be lined up with a lifeguard tower. Face the stone wall, and examine the inside corner of this wall.

Once you've located this letterbox, you may wish to hop over the wall, and pay your respects to William Keaumaikai and Mary Keliiwaiwaiole.

Please be very discreet in finding and very careful in re-hiding this letterbox. Unfortunately, I don't live in Kauai, so I won't be able to keep very close tabs on this letterbox.

I would be very pleased if you could drop me a note and let me know how my letterbox is doing.
