Spinner Dolphins (Nai'a in the Hawaiian language) are delightful acrobatic creatures. While visiting Kauai, we encountered a group of these dolphins resting near the "Forbidden Island" of Ni'ihau. Although this group was fairly low key, one did exhibit the spinning leap that gives them their name.

This letterbox is located on Kauai's north shore, past Princeville, at an amazing beach for snorkelling. If you plan to swim, please check the surf report, and use common sense. The sea is a powerful force!

Directions:

Take Highway 560 to Haena, and start watching for house numbers. The parking area for Tunnels Beach is a small dirt road with a chain link fence on either side, next to #57777 and across from telephone pole #14 on Highway 560.

Park on the dirt road, and face the ocean. On your right, along the chain link fence, is a palm tree. This palm is further from the beach than a tree that is growing on the inside of the fence. Reach under the fence, to check the base of this palm. I would suggest bringing your camera, and pretending to take photos, as this parking area can be very crowded.

Once you have found the letterbox, walk to the end of the dirt road, scramble down the
tree roots to the beach, and if weather and surf permit, enjoy some amazing snorkelling! If you chose not to snorkel, you'll still be able to enjoy a lovely beach with a view of the mountain that "played Bali Hai" in the film version of South Pacific. You're almost at the end of the road at Tunnels Beach. Shortly after this beach, the impassable Na Pali coastline begins.

Sadly, I do not live in Kauai, so I will not be able to check up on this box with much frequency. Please drop me a note, and let me know how my letterbox is doing.
