Who's the Boss...A Bruce Springsteen Tribute

Glastonbury, CT
NOTE: This is a 2 mile scenic hike along the eastern shore of Buckingham Reservoir. Though unmarked, the trails are generally easy to walk, with some gentle hills here and there.

From the intersection of routes 83 and 94 in Glastonbury, drive east on rte 94 (Hebron Avenue) for 1.5 miles. Turn left at the sign for Candlewick Kennels. Take an immediate left and park in the small lot near a yellow gate. For part of today's adventure you will be hiking along a very old stretch of road called Coops Mill Road. This is a great area for snow shoeing or cross country skiing in winter.
Walk past the yellow gate and walk along the gravelly road heading north for now. After about 2 or 3 minutes of walking the road rises slightly, then curves to the right in between two small hills. A short ways beyond that you will pass a steep embankment on the left with many birch trees along side. Immediately after the embankment you may hear the roar of rushing water. What you hear is the dam of Buckingham Reservoir to the left. Continue walking on the old road for about 100 yards until you come to a faint trail on the left. You'll know you are at the correct spot if you see a yellow reservoir sign at the junction and a large deciduous tree about 20 feet ahead on the left side of the old road that is missing its sister. Turn left on this path and head downhill towards the reservoir. After walking through an area of small pine trees you come to a "T" intersection. Turn left here and take 15 steps. Look to your right. You should see 3 or 4 "former trees" Go to the rightmost one. Hidden in the end is letterbox #1: "Born To Run". I recommend taking the box down to the dam and stamping in there. It is really scenic! Please...Please rehide very carefully. This is a popular spot. (You'll see why when you get there.)

"BORN TO RUN": Bruce Springsteen was born on September 23, 1949 in Freehold, NJ. Nicknamed "The Boss", he is a singer and songwriter who rose to fame as leader of the E Street Band. In the early 70's Rolling Stone Magazine dubbed him "The Future of Rock and Roll." In 1975 he recorded "Born To Run", considered by many to be one of the great rock albums ever. The title track became his first top 40 hit, peaking at number 23 on the Billboard Magazine charts.

After stamping in, backtrack uphill to the old road. Once there, turn left and continue along. At this point the road heads in an easterly direction. After about 200 yards you will pass a trail junction on the left labelled "48". Soon, after passing a major intersection on the right the road goes downhill then passes over a stream. You will notice a row of rocks lined up along the left side of the road. The 7th large stone looks like a triangle. Stop here. Note the large boulders on the right side of the road. Walk 43 steps at 85 degrees past them to a large flat rock that is waist high and about 10 feet long. Under the northeast side is letterbox #2: "Hungry Heart".

"HUNGRY HEART": This song, off of his 1980 album "The River", became Bruce's first top ten hit, reaching #5 on the charts. An interesting thing about this record is that background vocals were done by Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, former members of the 1960's group The Turtles. Here's another fact: In concert, Bruce Springsteen is known for giving fans their money's worth by having long, dynamic shows. Over the years he has been involved in several successful charity projects, including singing a solo on "We Are the World" by USA For Africa in 1985 and "Sun City" by Artists United Against Apartheid that same year.

{{{(Old clue: NO LONGER IN THIS LOCATION DUE TO LOGGING) Return to the road and continue on. It goes generally straight for a while. You'll pass over a small culvert. Eventually the road bends sharply to the right up a small hill. Just before you enter an open area with powerlines, look for a trail on the right. Turn here and travel a short ways up a small hill. Just as you start going down the other side, look to your left for a large fallen tree. Take 25-30 steps towards where the main branches fork. There you will discover letterbox #3: "Dancing In the Dark".}}}

NEW #3 CLUE: Return to the trail and continue in the direction you were headed. Follow along with the row of boulders on your left until you get to the last one with the twin tree to its left. Stop here. Turn to your right and go 22 steps off trail to the tree to the left of the huge, flat boulder with the stump next to it. Go to this tree and this ledge. The box is between the tree and the ledge under an overhang beneath a flat rock.

"DANCING IN THE DARK": In 1984, Bruce recorded the biggest selling album of his career. "Born In the USA" sold more than 10 million copies and spawned an unbelievable 7 top 10 hits. "Dancing In the Dark" climbed as high as #2 on the pop charts. Curious fact: The music video for this song shows Bruce performing in concert. At one point he reaches into the audience and pulls a fan on stage. It was Courtney Cox, who years later went on to star in the TV series "Friends".
In a career spanning more than 3 decades, Bruce Springsteen has sold more than 100 million records. He has won several Grammy Awards. In the 1990's he received an Academy Award for singing the title song from the critically acclaimed movie "Philadelphia". In addition, his songs have been recorded and become hits for Natalie Cole, the Pointer Sisters, and Manfred Mann's Earth Band. May he continue giving us great music for many more years to come!

After stamping in, return to the gravel road (Coop Mill Road). Turn left and continue until you return to the yellow gate and your car. I hope you enjoyed today's adventure.
