Geocaching, the high-tech sport of hide & seek, continues in Geauga Park District with the introduction of letterboxing. These hybrid caches will allow both letterboxers and geocachers to enjoy the sport of searching for these hidden containers.

As Geauga County celebrates its bicentennial in 2006, the letterbox/caches will have a historic theme and introduce you to the history of some of our parks. The first of four letterbox/caches for 2006 is located in Beartown Lakes Reservation. All letterboxes and geocaches must have a permit issued by the Geauga Park District before they are listed on a web site.

Bears abounded in days of old,
Thus calling the land Beartown as it is told.
Rumor has it bears are back again,
In search of “Beechnuts” to fatten up before they den.
Across from Middle Bear, the trail you must take,
Until you reach a view of Upper Bear Lake.
These lakes were created as a private fishing club,
With fish hatchery, trout raceway, and lodge as a hub.
Proceed north along the lake shore,
About 200 feet or more.
Here you’ll spot a downed dead tree,
Careful looking inside, a bear you might see!

This letterbox/cache expires January 1st 2007.
