This letterbox is located at The Strand, on the foreshore of Townsville. The Strand offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere for locals and visitors to Townsville. Its inclusiveness of people of various ages and interests, visual attractiveness, proximity to the sea and city, cleanliness and sense of safety, and the range of recreational and social opportunities available to the community have all been highlighted as attributes. On an average weekend over 10,000 people visit the Strand to take advantage of the amenities available for use by the public. These amenities include:

Two stinger enclosures.
A rock pool.
A basketball court.
An enclosed children's play area.
A water park.
Plenty of space and amenities for family picnics.

The Strand Wind Project weather monitoring system has been developed with the assistance of the Townsville State High School Centre of Excellence in Technology Maths and Science Renewable Energy Program. The interpretation system and mains power network connection has been developed in partnership with Ergon Energy.

In order to maximise the educational benefits of the Strand Wind Project, the interpretation system associated with the project includes power and weather information to demonstrate the relationship between wind power and energy output from the wind rotor.

The weather data is provided by a nearby weather station. This information is provided to the public via a Strand Wind Project Website (under development) and an interpretative display post with a LCD monitor display.

The Ropatec windrotor converts wind energy into electrical power for the mains grid. The wind rotor is calculated to produce 16 kWh per day on average - enough to power an energy efficient home in Townsville. Using the wind and sun to produce energy, we can reduce our reliance on coal and help protect the climate.

CLUE:

First find the Strand Wind Rotor. You must stand with the windrotor on your left, and then move around so that the LCD monitor display becomes hidden directly behind the rotor (away from you). Then face the ocean, and look for a large pinkish rock just beyond the grassline. The letterbox is hidden under this rock.

Be careful, as there are usually many people visiting the strand. There is a picnic table handy on which to sit and wait for a lull in the passing foot-traffic.
