Dead Horse Canyon is a charming piece of wilderness in the heart of an urban area. It gets its name from a feral horse, that used to roam the canyon. It was a favorite of the local kids. It died there in 1907, giving the park its name.
To get there, from the north or south, get to the north end of Highway 167 at Renton. It continues on through town in the form of Rainier Avenue. Follow it North through Renton until you hit 68th Ave. and take a left (head West). Go about one block and you'll see the park entrance and parking area on the left.
This loop is about a mile, not too steep, and suitable for children. Strollers can't make the stairs though. From the entrance, go forward up first set of steps, continue through sword fern alley. Up the second set of steps with licorice ferns on left. Let Taylor creek soothe your spirit. Up 3rd set of steps, with hollow nurse log on the left. More steps, on left you will see two arches, on right a mossy pyramid. Continue on past the cedar snag on the right, over the bridge. On the left look for the big Y, over the bridge on the left, over the river and through the woods. Medusa's roots on the left, up and to the right to go over the third bridge. Up the stairs, under the cedar umbrella, down the steps, up the 6 steps, forward 25 paces from the top of the steps and past the two cedars on the right you will see a maple snag with a hollow root system. There you will find our letterbox. Simply continue on the trail to get back to the parking area.
SORRY, AS OF JULY 2010 OUR LETTERBOX HAS GONE MISSING. WE'LL REPLACE IT WHEN WE CAN. THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL SITE FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO PLACE A LETTERBOX ALSO.
