These boxes were placed to introduce the Clennan family to the joy of letterboxing. Merry Christmas, Clennans!
Getting there:
At the intersection of 30th and K-61 highway, continue eastwardly for approximately two blocks until you come to a center whose driveway is on your left marked by blocks of bugs and animals. Enter the driveway and follow the road to the parking lot.
Note of CAUTION:
I have been informed that a letterboxer has gotten poison ivy while completing this series. These boxes were planted in the winter, so I don't know what the spring/summer/fall conditions are at each box. Please use caution when searching and remember: Leaves of three, let it be.
Finding the boxes:
After exiting your vehicle, head toward the visitor's center by crossing over the small bridge that is bordered by four pillars on either side. Look out for the soaring eagle! Navigate around the eagle and follow the signs to the Outer Loop Trail.
Nuthin' But Net:
Continue down the Outer Loop Trail and you will pass a picnic table on your left. Remain on the trail and continue for 60 steps. On your right you will see a Blackhaw tree. Go 20 more steps along the path. To your right will be a very large tree that is about 15 steps off of the path. The box is located at the base of this tree. It is hidden under a rock on the side of the tree closest to the fence. Be discreet, and rehide well!
Mr. Roboto:
9-17-10 update: This box may be missing. It is NOT very near the train tracks, so don't venture too far in that direction! ****CAUTION: I have been informed that this box is surrounded by POISON IVY. Use your better judgement when attempting to reach it. If anyone in your party is allergic to poison ivy it's best not to chance getting the oil on you and spreading it to them.****
Back to the path! Keep going on the trail and you will see an area of prairie grass on your left. At the end of the pairie grass, the path will hook to the left. From the Outer Loop sign after the hook, take 15 steps along the path until you come to a Y-shaped tree that has one short arm. Follow the path that begins to the left of the Y tree for 10 steps. You will end up standing between two large trees. Look directly in front of you for two small pine trees along a ridge. Go to the pine tree that is on the right. From the pine tree, take 15 steps along the ridge. To your left you will see a cluster of small trees. Look for the triplet trees. The box is hidden under logs and leaves at the base of the triplet tree farthest from the ridge. Avoid the train tracks and rehide the box well!
Abracadabra:
Back to the Y tree and the path. Continue further down the path to the Woodard trail intersection. Follow the Woodard trail to the right. Pass by the Wedding Nook and stop at the Y in the path at the American Linden tree. Enjoy the creek. Follow the path to the right. Be cautious of the spikes on the Hardy Orange tree. Leave the Woodard trail and follow the Lower Pond Loop. Sit on the bench and enjoy the view. As you sit on the bench, look to your right down the trail to find the elephant tree whose trunk stretches across the trail ***(I have been informed that the elephant's trunk has been sawn off. This tree is also the largest tree behind you and has a bird house.)*** The box is hidden under logs at the base of this tree on the side furthest from the bench. Be discreet and rehide well!
Be sure to visit the visitor's center. There is a gift store and fun educational activities for the kids!
