(A FLORIDA Christmas Tree)

Bowditch Park is located at the northern tip of Estero Island. The most challenging part of Finding this letterbox will be waiting for the traffic on Estero Blvd. or the San Carlos Bridge! Even a map may not help you navigate to the point, so here are a few pointers: approaching from Fort Myers via San Carlos Blvd, veer right at the end of the bridge. Approaching from the south (eg, Lovers Key, Bonita Beach), take the right hand turn at Times Square and veer into the left-hand turn lane. Note the signs indicating Parking and Exit Island. Follow Estero Blvd all the way to the end.

Now, begin your quest at the four sails of Bowditch Park. There are two ways to reach this letterbox. One, by land. Two, by sea (sort of).

ONE (if by land): from the four sails, head to the NE corner of the main parking lot. Follow the trail there northerly and uphill to the Butterfly Garden. From the grouping of four benches and seven palms, look to the NW. If the flora has not grown too much, you may be able to see part of a bench, low to the ground, and a utility box or two.

You cannot walk directly there; turn back toward the East and head for the fence along the shore. Find the trail heading North and downhill. At the bottom, which way will you go? If you stop at the end of a boardwalk and sight 230 to your destination, you chose wisely.

TWO (if by sea): from the four sails, head to the beach via the wide boardwalk heading 260. When you reach the beach, turn right and walk north until you can walk north no longer. Buoys 4A and 5 will be just offshore, between 300 and 330 (depending on tide and current). Now that you have reached the northern tip of Estero Island, continue along the shore at 120/130. When the No Swimming/No Lifeguard sign is at 250 and Slow Speed/Manatee Zone is at 80, take the narrow footpath at 195. Turn left at the end where it meets a wider trail, then right and uphill to your destination.

DESTINATION: Now, where should you sit for the best view of this Florida Christmas tree? I recommend back row, center, under SAFE-T-DECK.

FOR REHIDING: Note that the letterbox is directly under the support beam, anchored by TWO transplanted geological formations, the smaller, more angular one being on top of the larger one, both of which should be squarely atop the letterbox (which, of course, is properly sealed with the two ziploc bags also being sealed).

Enjoy!
