Short History:

In about 1840, Theo Brackett, a local Swampscott fisherman, designed the Swampscott Dory (basically, a flat bottom row boat) to meet the needs of local fisherman who “fished off the beach.” Due to the shallow slope of Swampscott beaches, this double-ended dory was designed with a flatter bottom which allowed fisherman to get closer to shore. Its round-sided middle allowed for more room to work and store fish. Today, used mostly for pleasure, it is said that the Swampscott Dory is the “aristocrat” of all dorys.

Directions:

Travel NE on Humphrey Street away from Lynn. You will see Fisherman’s Beach, a pier and a boathouse. If you look closely, you will see a few examples of the Swampscott Dory here. Bear right at the lights onto Puritan Road. Across from 96 Puritan Road you will see a small beach. This beach has a resident only parking ban but this box is a drive up and you will only have to leave your car for a few minutes. If you are a real stickler for the rules, you can park back at Fisherman’s beach and walk the quarter mile or so.

Clues:

Facing the benches/flagpole from the parking area, walk toward the wall that goes along the street. Continue to walk four steps beyond the fifth column. You will find the Swampscott Dory located in a crevice just above a large rock swirled with granite. Please replace the rocks carefully so that the weather will not wash the letterbox away!
