Difficulty: Easy (unless your hunting in 27º with snow and ice on the ground. Then its a little tougher, I found out when placing the last three boxes 3/11/07)
Time: appox. 1 hr.+, shorter if you park at the Willow Bend Picnic Area*(see alternate directions at end of clues).
Please bring your stamp, a stamp pad, pen and an old rag to wipe off the pouch/box/your hands. Bug repellant might come in handy during the summer months.

NOTE: I want to give a special thank you to Polly/bibliophile for placing the first letterbox for me. Without her help, this box and probably the series, would not be.

This letterbox series' stamps depict 4 themes around Cleveland in which Clevelandites take pride. The subjects are located in various parts of town and due to time constraints and the fact that the areas in which the subjects are located do not lend themselves to placements, leads me to put all the letterboxes in this location. Also, you will notice that the enclosure pouches for a couple of the letterboxes are not water proof so please make sure the baggies are resealed well to protect the logbook from moisture. This location can also very busy so please be discrete in getting and replacing the boxes and try to hide your tracks and the box well upon replacing it. Thank you in advance for your courtesy and I hope you enjoy hunting for and finding these boxes and your stroll through the trails of the park.

Directions: Olmstead Falls is a suburb S.W. of Cleveland.
This box is located in the southern portion of the Rocky River Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks. http://www.clemetparks.com/pdf/rrsouthmap.pdf Between the Columbia Road entrance to the Metropark and the Spafford Road entrance is the Lagoon Picnic area - park in the parking lot along the Valley Parkway on the west side of the road, just south of the Lagoon Picnic area.

Clues:

Box 1: ON THE GRIDIRON
Start walking south on the all purpose trail. Follow this trail across Spafford Road and across the foot bridge across the Rocky River. Soon the Rocky River will be close on your right hand side just on the other side of a split rail fence. The trail will veer slightly left, closer to the road. You will notice the bridle trail that leads down the hill from the left, goes across the road and across the all purpose trail heading straight toward the river. Take this trail heading toward the river, and follow the turn to the left so that you are walking ‘upstream’, more or less along the river’s edge. The bridle trail curves to parallel the all purpose trail, then bends to the right toward the river again. Eventually you will notice a curve in the road, and in the bridle trail to the left. Once again, the all-purpose trail will head off to the left and you will continue to follow the bridle trail to the right along the river.
You will come to a distinct intersection: straight ahead (looking further up trail, across the all-purpose trail and across the Valley Parkway) you can probably see the entrance to the Willow Bend Picnic Area - do not go straight. Take the 90% turn (but not a compass reading!) to the right down the small slope to continue on the bridle trail. Once again you’ll more or less be following the river. You will soon notice on the right hand side,
across the river that a hillside/cliff appears. Shortly after you notice this, you will cross a culvert that goes underneath the bridle trail. 30 paces (1 pace = 2 steps) beyond, on the left hand side of the bridle trail is a distinctive stump of a tree (with a tangle of roots) lying on it side. In the slit opening toward the root end of the tree, on the bridle trail side
of the tree, find the ON THE GRIDIRON letterbox. Rehide carefully and return to the trail.

Box 2: ON THE DIAMOND
Head back as you came on the bridle trail down river and then back up the rise where right is the picnic area and left is as you came (unless you parked at the picnic area). Go left at the sharp bend where there is a trail marker about 10 feet up on the tree to the right just after you turn left. Start counting steps (not paces from here on out) where left is one and right is two . From the trail marker tree go 40 steps and stop. Look to the right for several cut portions of logs. Go to the third one back and notice the long slit in the top of the log. The Pride of Cleveland ON THE DIAMOND is in the slit about 1/2 way down the log, under a limb. After checking both ways on the trail and it is safe, make a perch on the log and do the stamping and then return to the trail.

Box 3: ON THE WATER FRONT
Continuing downstream as you were, from abreast of the slit log count 160 steps and you should be close to a fallen tree on the left that almost sticks a cut end onto the path. Its about 1 step off the path to the cut end. Turn around and go back 4 steps and look to the left (about 340*) to a short stump beside a tree that forks into two about 4 feet off the ground. ON THE WATER FRONT is in the stump under sticks.

Box 4: ON THE HARDWOOD COURT
Back to the path heading for the picnic area. From abreast of the last box take the trail 26 steps and look right for a stump about the same height as I am.....6 foot plus and go to that stump. From here look toward the river. Find the largest and closest tree to the river and go to it and look behind it for a gnarled stump that I drug over there. If it is not there, find another tree with one there and look under it for ON THE HARDWOOD COURT. Make sure the coast is clear before retrieving the box and do your thing stamping in. When done you can either go back on the bridle trail to your car or head toward the picnic area and pick up the all purpose trail back to your car or return to your car in the picnic area parking lot like I did.
This completes this series of letterboxes and I hope you enjoyed the hunt. Please drop me a line through the contact the placer function and I will do my best to reply back with my thanks for a condition/status report on the boxes. Cordially, Glenn/Safari Man of Vincent, OH.

* (Alternate instructions: if you park at the Willow Bend Picnic Area: cross the Valley Parkway and head slightly to the right where you notice the all-purpose trail basically paralleling the roadway and what looks like a wide dirt trail heading (straightish) toward the river. Take this wide dirt trail and when it connects up to the bridle trail, take the left down the small hill following the above directions.)
