Located near the Whistle Stop Playground and the Railroad & Heritage Museum in Temple, TX (315 W. Ave B).
Some History -in 1881 Temple, TX was the division point of 3 lines of the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railroad (GC&SF) heading N to Ft. Worth, S to Galveston, and W to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The depot evolved into a 2 story wooden structure over the years. In 1898, a Fred Harvey house was built east of the depot to serve travelers. In 1896 the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe RR bought the GC&SF and Temple became the site for the RR’s southern division headquarters. The current depot was built in 1911 and served the Santa Fe RR until 1989. The depot area was restored in 2000.
Our kids love to play at the wonderful Whistle Stop playground. It’s open from 7am to sunset. Make sure to leave some time in your letterboxing day for the kiddos to play a bit here. There are also many spots to picnic as well if that suits you.
Train buffs may want to also visit the museum (Hours: Mon-Sat 10-4, Sun 12-4; Cost: Adults $5, Children $2, 5 and under are free), but you can climb onto the trains on display for free. The kids of all ages love to do that.
Directions –
Enter Temple on I-35. Exit onto Hwy 53 and head East. It will be a one-way street heading Eastward (53 eastbound is also called W. Central). Turn south onto 7th street and follow that a few blocks until it dead-ends into Avenue B. Park in any of the parking lots – we park near the playground.
To the letterbox:
After parking, visit the Santa Fe 3423 engine on display on the tracks. Follow the colored circle brands south-eastward. You should see the Railroad Museum & Depot on your left. Change tracks and follow the green circles till you reach the matching color train car. Find the MKT 140. The T shows the way to the left, 5 hole brown box, behind which you will find the treasure you seek. Be sure to be sneaky and re-hide well as this is a popular place. If you need help, ask the gift shop staff - who are great!
