Find the New Jersey Monument, Route 355 just north of the Monocacy River Bridge. This monument to the 14th New Jersey Regiment was the first of the several monuments to be erected on the battlefield. It was unveiled on July 11, 1907.

Sam the Sheepdog
Park in the lot facing the monument and walk down the staircase on your right. Go to the monument and read up on some history. After reading turn to face the parking area and turn your head in the same direction as the statue, looking toward the historic Monocacy River Bridge. Spy the new split rail fence and the second and third stone fence post behind it in the distance. **An update**(There are no stone fence posts...just some holes where it looks like they might have been.) From there look to a large tree. Walk 30 paces to that tree that has a smaller tree twisting itself around it. At the base of this tree under some rocks, sticks and things you will find Sam the Sheepdog.
