Difficulty: Easy, less than a mile one way, with a bit of moderate terrain.
Directions: Take Hwy. 84/285 north from Santa Fe through Espanola. Approximately 6 miles past Espanola, look for signs for Ojo Caliente. You'll be turning right on Hwy. 285 as it splits off and heads to Ojo Caliente (another 17 miles). In town, look for the signs for Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs and park in their parking lot.
Clues: From the parking lot, walk along the row of cottages, to the right. Climb the steps and follow the path over the berm, then turn left and head up the old road up the hill. In about 5 minutes, you'll see a road coming in on the left; ignore it and continue straight on the road up the hill. In another 5 minutes, the road will begin descending the back side of the hill. You will come to an intersection: the main road goes straight, a trail goes off to the left, and a very faint track goes to the right (behind the No Motor Vehicles sign). Take this faint trail to the right. Walk for a few minutes down the slope until you see a sandy arroyo on the right. Leave the trail, go into the arroyo, and turn right. You are now heading downstream. Head down the canyon (CAUTION: DO NOT ENTER the canyon if there are thunderstorms in the area as this canyon could flash flood and be extremely dangerous)- climb down the canyon, past the pink rock outcropping, to a very large, impassable drop off. Be careful and stop here! To your left, uphill, is a lone juniper. Letterbox is near base of tree under some pink quartz rocks. Please re-hide well!
A soak at the mineral springs at Ojo is highly recommended. See www.ojocalientespa.com.
