Aspen Vista is a popular hiking trail in the Sangre de Cristo mountains near Santa Fe. The trail follows an access road to the radio towers on top of the mountain.
Difficulty: Easy in distance (about a mile one way to letterbox), moderate in terrain.
Directions: From Washington Ave/Bishops Lodge Rd. in Santa Fe, head north, then turn right onto Artist Rd. (Hyde Park Rd.), headed toward the Santa Fe Ski Basin. Drive 12.6 miles to the Aspen Vista trailhead and parking lot, which is on your right.
Clues: Begin hiking up the trail. After hiking for 15 to 20 minutes, you will pass a small concrete structure on your left, then a sign for Big Tesuque Trail on your right. Soon you will see a creek crossing under the trail. Just before the creek, look for a small footpath going up the hill on your left. Follow this trail uphill for about 5 to 10 minutes and then it will cross a very tiny stream/ trickle. From this point, go uphill about 21 paces to where a rock outcropping sits on the right side of the trail. Carefully step to the right hand side of this rock, and under a pink rock you will find the letterbox! Please re-hide carefully. Please note that this box is inaccessible during winter and spring as trail is buried in snow.
