Welcome to Alburg Dunes. This 625-acre property became a state park in 1996. It is named for the sand dunes near the center and western end of the south-facing natural sand beach. This beach is amongst the longest beaches on Lake Champlain. Please visit: http://vtfpr.anr.state.vt.us/parks/htm/alburg.cfm for more information.

Here you will find three hand carved letterboxes that depict things that might POSSIBLY be found if you study Lake Champlain long enough!!!. Traveling on Route 2 (in either direction) turn onto Route 129 (Look for “God’s Little Brown Church”). Follow Route 129 for about 1.1 miles, where the road curves to the right… turn LEFT. This is Coon Point Road (But I am not sure if it is clearly marked.). Follow this road all the way around to the end where you will find Alburg Dunes State Park. (Do not go to your right at the end of this road as it is private property.) In season, there is a modest fee (and additional small fees if you want to rent a kayak or paddle boat). This is a great spot for a picnic and swimming… although this was hard to imagine when I planted these boxes in 2 degree and WINDY weather!
From the entrance station, follow the road with the lake on your right and the marsh on your left. This is Beach Road, although not clearly marked at the time of this planting…check out the map at the web site above!!!
Box # 1 – FLOATING ALONG – Will be ridiculously simple to find off season but may present a challenge when the park is in use! Please be discrete! At the intersection of Beach Road and the first trail to the right look for a three sister stump. (There is a sign down this path that says “fee for service area”). Look in the middle stump and hide well!!!
Box #2 – MAKING A SPLASH – Continue your hike along Beach Road until you come to the second path on your right heading toward the lake. Please note the “Beware of Poison Ivy” sign and take it to heart! Before you reach this sign, look to your right to see a couple of old trees that have shed a lot of their bark. Look at the feet of one of these trees – behind some fallen bark.
Box #3 – CHAMP – Return to Beach Road and continue to your right. At approximately where the third trail leads right to the lake, look right for a multi-trunk tree into which another tree has crashed. Behind this tree is the stump of the fallen tree. Look in the “tree debris” at the base of the stump for your third prize at Alburg Dunes….
Retrace Beach Road back to your car.
