The Hardie Box

Location: This box is located in my hometown of Beverly, MA.
Length: Short- good for young kids
Stamp: hand-carved
Please bring your own inkpad.

Please begin your adventure on the Beverly Town Common. The Town Common is across the street for the Beverly Library at 32 Essex Street. See a large building to the right of the common? That building is now the Montserrat College of Art. When I was a kid this was the Hardie Elementary School. Follow this link to see what the common used to look like back then.http://www.primaryresearch.org/postcards/HardieSchool.jpg

What is the tallest man made item in the Common now? __________________ (A)

Please go on the right path that brings you to the gazebo. Look at the two benches. When did Robert Clerkin die? ______________ (B)

To your left you will see the gazebo. Please look at the Privateer Trail sign. Where are three triangles on the sign? _________________ (C)

Exit the common and turn right onto Hale St. Cross the street to see the 2nd oldest house in town. The Hale Farm was owned Reverend John Hale, whose 2nd wife (Sarah) was accused of witchcraft, though she was never convicted. What number minister was he in the First Church in Beverly? _______ (D)

Continue down Hale Street. Do you see a steeple off to your right and a fire station in front of you? The steeple is the only part of the 1st Baptist church that survived a fire in 1975. The fire was quite amazing considering the proximity of the two buildings.

Continue on to the Civil War memorial. You are now at the intersection of Abbot and Hale Street.

With the memorial at your back, walk up Abbot Street to the Abbot Street Cemetery. Inside the square enclosed by a rock wall you will find the gravestone of Robert Hale (son of Rev. John Hale) among those of other early residents.

Do you see an item in this area like item (A) that you saw in the town common? Can find a dedication marker that matches (B)? You will find the box in the (D) hole in the rock wall, in the (C) hole to near the dedication marker.
