Carved by Chuck and Music Woman for the DEP Forestry Field Day Gathering
Peoples State Forest, Barkhamsted, Connecticut
From the Matthies Grove Parking Lot, walk or drive to Greenwoods Road and park just inside of the gate at the beginning of the road. Walk a short distance up the road to the Blue with Red Dot Trail, which enters the road on the right. This is the same starting point for the second and third Samhain Trilogy letterboxes by the Lil Banditos. The blazes also go up the street… Do Not Take Those!
At the “Y” intersection (with the outhouse on the left), take a right to continue on the red dot trail. Soon you will come to a field of ledge and boulders on the right. Go to the tree with many blazes on it. Walk behind this tree and behind the domino rocks to find the CT State Parks and Forests Letterbox, carved by Music Woman, under a “Jay Drew style” rock (and I don't mean a white one ;-).
Continue on the red dot trail and go over a brook and climb (or go around) a fallen tree. Go up a steep hill with a large ledge/boulder on your left. At the top, it flattens out slightly. Then you will see another large (but smaller than the first) ledge on your left with some miniscule ledge about 10 feet from the trail. Look under the miniscule ledge behind the protruding rock, holding up the ledge, to find the Smokey The Bear Letterbox, carved by Chuck Straub.
Continue on the red dot trail to the second Samhain box, or go back the way you came. You will be thankful that it is downhill on the way back!
