* 12/17/06 RETIRED * My plan is to replace this soon

Welcome to Burlington! You will be visiting the common located at the center of town. The Public Library, various town halls, post office, and police and fire stations are all located very near by. And so is one wild rose!

Box Type: Micro-tube with scroll log, bring pen and ink
Stamp: Hand-carved
Location: Intersection of Cambridge St (Rt 3A), Bedford St and Center St in Burlington, MA 01803
Parking: One hour free on Center St – lots behind
Ease: Should be easy! <15 minutes, flat and level. All compass readings are magnetic.

Go to the Gazebo at the center of the common and stand in front of the stairs. Let me point out a few sites of interest. On the opposite side of Cambridge Street is Simonds Park, which has a neat playground, two baseball fields, a street hockey court (!), skateboard park and tennis courts. Across from Simonds Park at the corner of Cambridge and Bedford St is the Burlington Public Museum. Never been to it. To the right of this, after the garage shop, is the Old Burying Ground, a 1.1 acre parcel which was used from 1734 to 1892. Behind you at the intersection of Centre St and Bedford St is Marion Tavern at Grand View Farm, consisting of at least one 18th century building and several from the 19th century. This is in the process of being restored.

Ok, at compass bearing 240 degrees, walk on the path towards the intersection of Cambridge St and Bedford St. Approx 20 steps before you reach the sidewalk, turn left and walk 15 paces – you should now be in front of a large rock with a plaque facing the street

Clue A: This rock is commemorating the Burlington ??? Trail

Clue B: In what month was this plaque issued?

__ __ __ __ __
B1 B2 B3 B4 B5

Return the way you came back to the gazebo. Again, standing at the stairs, find 20 degrees and start walking towards the brick wall with the line of trees above it. A little before the wall on the ground will be another small memorial.

Clue C: What war is this commemorating?

C1 C2 C3 C4 C5 C6 C7

Clue D: What is the last word on the plaque?

__ __ __ __ __ __
D1 D2 D3 D4 D5 D6

Now turn right and walk parallel to the wall until you meet a set of stairs going up to the left. Take the stairs to the top. Walk 25 steps from the top of the stairs then turn right and go another 15 steps. You should now be in front of a granite monument.

Clue E: What is the name of the mountain depicted on this?

__ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
E1 E2 E3 E4 E5 E6 E7 E8 E9

Clue F: What year did the event depicted here happen?

__ __ __ __
F1 F2 F3 F4

Return to the top of the stairs. If you are facing the stairs, start walking to the right, again parallel to the small trees. You should soon see a black cannon on a white base, not sure if this is pointing at the bank or the fire station.

Clue G: What is the number of the post?

__ __ __
G1 G2 G3

Now let’s get that box!

Go to B2 A4 C5 D2 at G1 F4 F4 degrees

F1 D1 C4 A2 B2 out from E5 A6 E1C3, E2 C5 D6 A8 B3 B5 D5 E6 C1 A2 D1, at F1 F4 F4 degrees.

Some helpful hints: it may be easier to approach from the side closest to a street. Also, outlet is on opposite side.

Please rehide carefully. Enjoy!
