The Thinking of England Series
Hoydens Hill Open Space in Fairfield
Beers Road (on Easton/Fairfield line), go west, past Rolling Hills on the left.
Not even a quarter of a mile on the left is a chain across the road/trail. No sign exists. It is easy to miss which is fine because the only real place to park is at the chain (I always turn around).
Go up trial (bring boots). Turn onto first trail to left. Pass huge pine tree on the left. Make a mental note of it.
A little bit up the trail there is a tall dead tree on left. Stand next to it. This is the right tree if
At 300 degrees is the big pine you passed a minute ago.
At 270 degrees is big oak across trail from pine tree.
At 240 degrees is another big oak and a big fallen tree.
At 180 degrees is big oak next to trail.
On left is a log with bark on its east side. Look under bark for the Letterbox and Telephone Letterbox #1
Continue on trail. Cross through rock wall, trail then bends right along the rock wall. After a while, take right trail through rock wall.
Keep going down hill until you see a tall tree to the left with large old vines. Turn around at this tree. Go back up trail 17 steps. Turn right. You should be facing a rock wall, some of which has fallen a bit. To your left where the rock wall is getting bigger is the Churchill Letterbox #2. Look on back side of wall, under a white quartz rock the size of a head (big tree behind you).
Should take 20 minutes, stamps are hand cut.
