During the American Civil War, public opinion in the North was that the destruction of civilian ships was cowardly and criminal. The cruise of CSS “Tallahassee” did just that at the instruction of Confederate Secretary of the Navy Mallory, “The character and force of your vessel point to the enemy's commerce as her most appropriate field of action, and it is hoped that her speed and capacity for carrying fuel will enable her to pay proper attention to the shores of New England and its fisheries.”

On August 15, 1864, Cmdr. John Taylor Wood, CSN, captain of the CSS “Tallahassee” captured and destroyed the merchant schooner “Restless.” She was one of the 33 vessels that raider captured or destroyed during a 19-day cruise from Wilmington, North Carolina to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The captain and crew of the “Restless” were put ashore and the vessel was plundered and scuttled.

Start at the final resting place of her owner, her last captain’s father. He lies in the town where she was built. Facing his stone, turn 90° toward where his daughter Jane lies, and walk 8 paces to the road. Follow the road left 34 paces to a spruce on the right side of the road with roots crawling all over a ledge. Atop this ledge, under a root, lies the Schooner “Restless” letterbox.
