PARK INFORMATION

There is a parking fee but it's minimal.

Swallow Falls State Park, located approximately 8 miles west of Maryland’s Deep Creek Lake, contains four beautiful waterfalls. The Youghiogheny River flows along the park's borders, passing through shaded rocky gorges and creating rippling rapids. Muddy Creek Falls is a crashing 53-foot waterfall – a spectacular sight – and the tallest free-falling waterfall in Maryland. Tall hemlocks dominate the silent woods. The meandering trails through Swallow Falls guide hikers to some of the most breath-taking scenery in Western Maryland. During the season, the park costs $2 per person; in the off-season, the park charges by the car. Don’t forget to bring your swimsuit and denim shorts to go rock sliding on Upper and Lower Swallow Falls. During the heat of the summer, Lakeside Creamery sells delicious homemade ice cream near the Information Center.

NOW FOR THE CLUES …

From the parking area, follow trail signs to Swallow Falls (not Muddy Creek!)
Pass the My Side of the Mountain tree into which you can crawl (It's almost gone at this point but the giant is still visible.)
Down the long steps and take a right
You will see Swallow Falls from a great height
Fifty paces upstream you must go
Find the new path and go against water flow
You’ll travel through a grove of snaky tree roots
Pass by rocks with large tree shoots
Step over mid-trail the hollow tree stump
Find Tolliver Falls and over stream do jump
Walk along the path that is to the left
Climb over three fallen trees too heavy to heft
Two smaller, one bigger – you are nearly there
Find the second big rock ledge and watch out for bears!
Walk to the ledge with steps one, two, three
Search for the source of the last fallen tree
Follow the ledge back the way you came
In the hollow stump find the book to stamp your name

Please let us know if you enjoyed the park and the condition of the letterbox. ENJOY !
