This letterbox is hidden in Fairmount Cemetery, 3902 Rockingham Rd. Davenport, IA.
This is the west end of Davenport, near where Rockingham Rd. becomes Hwy. 22.

When I was young and gullible, my brother who was much older and wiser and possessed a shiny new driver’s license, used to terrorize me with stories of his adventures at Fairmount Cemetery. He skillfully wove deliciously scary stories of hatchet men and glowing eyes lurking in the cemetery in the dead of night.

So, in honor of my goofy brother and his oh-so believable tales, I’ve hidden this letterbox at Fairmount Cemetery.

It has a hand carved stamp that replicates the colonial headstone carvings I saw when I visited New England. Bring your own stamp pad.

Enter Fairmount Cemetery and turn left, follow road as it curves right, to the top of the hill. At the Marie L. Burmeister memorial rock (she was 101 years old!), turn right, park at the maintenance garage, and go afoot.

Miller’s incomplete archway points the way.
Pass through the Garden of Edens,
Pointing to heaven, a spire of pink,
Follow the grassy lane toward the edge of the brink,
What do you think?
Do Tom’s Tall Tales lure once again?
Does the Dehning family know?…
Will the Melchert family show?…
Someone who’s lived 101 years must know.
She and her family are buried here, very near,
Find her and face her and it will be clear.
Look over your right shoulder for one who’s broken and nameless.
Tall tales come from such graves,
And from teenagers who are shameless.
