Location where boxes are placed: Hocking Hills State Forest
Difficulty: Super easy BUT if you have small children, PLEASE BE SURE TO HOLD THEIR HANDS. THIS IS THE SAME WITH PETS. PLEASE TAKE THIS WARNING SERIOUSLY.
BONUS: As you find these boxes, you are going to be able to see the beauty of Conkle's Hollow without the burn of the hike! :-)
Bring: Pen or pencil, a compass and stamp pad
Stamp: Handmade

***All 3 boxes are alive and well as of 03.05.07
***PLEASE SEARCH FOR BOXES DISCRETELY AND BE PATIENT. EACH IS HIDDEN VERY CLOSE TO THE TRAIL IN AN EFFORT NOT TO DISTURB NATURE. Actually finding the box should take only seconds once you reach the area, therefore reducing the chances of being discovered. I hope this makes sense.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE AREA WHERE BOXES ARE PLACED:
The Hocking Hills are a wooded group of hills in eastern Ohio known for their beauty and display of fall colors and breathtaking winter scenes. The area consists of small hollows and box canyons. The attractions include Old Mans cave, Cedar Falls, Conkles Hollow and other areas of interest. The Hocking Hills region is located in southeast Ohio. Rivers and streams snake through the little canyons flanked by soaring sandstone cliffs. Thick forests are the habitat to a diverse number of animal species and plants. Tens of thousands of acres of state parks and state and national forest offer fun hiking and interesting topography, as well as quiet places for relaxation.

BACKGROUND/INSPIRATION ABOUT THE STAMPS:

Since 1932 ROCKY® Boots has been the leading maker of work boots, duty boots and hunting boots....(a recent article mentioned they were even shipped to our soldiers in Baghdad!)

The ROCKY® Outdoor Gear Store is located across the street from company headquarters in scenic Nelsonville, Ohio. Nelsonville is located about 60 miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio, on U.S. Route 33. This newly remodeled store is housed in the old factory building and features three full floors and 30,000 square feet of rugged outdoor merchandise.

Here is a testimonial from a typical Rocky Boot Owner.

Dear Rocky:
These are my Rocky Boots. They turned six years old in August of 1998, and they have been through it all.

• They walked countless miles when I worked as a janitor and a security guard in college.
• They have been in the Atlantic Ocean and in the Gulf of Mexico.
• They spent hours hiking in the swamps of south Florida.
• The slow danced to Sinatra on the beach in the Florida Keys.
• I wore them on stage when I played guitar in a band.
• I rode a motorcycle around Lake Okeechobee with them on.
• They got left in a tree for two days (and on the roof of the house once).
• They attended class almost every day of my senior year of college (except when they were in the tree).
• They walked ten miles through the mud after sinking a four-wheel-drive in a canal.
• They made it through four girlfriends.
• I wore them the night I proposed to my wife.
• I had them on when my daughter was born!
• I once had an office job, and I wore them with a dress shirt and a tie.
• Now in semi-retirement, they get a little mink oil and go to a church supper on Wednesday evenings

I can’t thank you enough for producing a boot that is up to the challenge of life.

Sincerely,
MPE

If Rocky Boots can make it through all that, then surely they can hike to where these 3 letterboxes have been placed. Now on to the clues.

CLUES
Locate the State Forest Headquarters on SR 374. Approximately 0.1 mile south of the HQ building on the left hand side of the road is a gravel pull-off location where you can park. At the south (lower) end of the gravel parking spot is a brown sign telling you that the Forestry HQ is up hill.

ROCKY BOOTS - A TRADITION
From that sign, walk 5 or 6 paces uphill in the parking area and look to your right for a sneaky path to get to the (Conkles Hollow)trail. (There is no trail sign.) From that 3-way intersection hike to your left 50 paces (2 steps = 1 pace) going over or through a mini rock bed waterfall and into the forest. To your left about 4 or 5 steps, in the end of that big honkin' fallen tree under bark and tree debris is what you are looking for. ***Please rehide well.

ROCKY BOOTS - RIGHT
Get back on the trail and continue an additional 50 paces staying on the lower trail. You should be standing at a "V-shaped" drop off to your right. LOOK approximately 6 paces at 210 degrees. You should see a large upright tree that is on the lower edge of the upper trail. There is a rather long skinnier tree that is lining this side of the upper trail. There is another "V" where this long skinny tree was cut at a diagonal and the two ends are touching each other. Go back to the place where you can now get to the upper trail and find that "V". What you are looking for is in the middle of that "V" under some rocks and leaves. ***Please rehide well.

ROCKY BOOTS - LEFT
Continue on the trail another 100 paces. Immediately on the LEFT of the trail is a very large, moss-covered, double trunked tree with a tiny pine tree seedling starting its life. On the high side of this double-trunked tree at the base under rocks and leaves is the last box. ***Once again, please rehide well.

If you have ever hiked this Conkles Hollow trail before, you will for sure appreciate the fact that after 20 years of hiking here I discovered this sneaky path and saved everyone the burn of the hike! :-)

FINAL FOOTNOTE: Rocky Boots from Nelsonville, Ohio is the official supplier of one style of boot for the US Army. My son recently deployed to Afghanistan on Jan. 21, 2007. This is his 3rd deployment in less than 5 years. While I was at Fort Bragg seeing off several platoons as they deployed, there were Rocky Boot Boxes overflowing the dumpsters!! I wish I had taken a picture! Nice to know a piece of Ohio goes with these men and women of our military!

Be sure to record your finds!
