It Started With A Tavern

Short Pump, the fastest growing area in the Richmond Metropolitan area, now boasts a movie theater, regional outdoor mall, a Wal-Mart Super center, and numerous shops and restaurants. However, the bustling suburban hot spot you see today has only been around since 1996. Those who travel through Short Pump today are sure to ask about the origin of this eccentric name. To find out, you have to go way, way back.

To get there:
I-64 exit 178-A (Short Pump exit)
Left at 5th traffic light onto Pump Rd.
Left into Short Pump Park (next to Short Pump Elementary School) You will actually turn into the school parking lot and park at the far right end near the baseball field.

Clues:

Box #1

Walk to the picnic pavilion, through the shelter and onto the playground. To the far left corner of the playground you can get on to a path leading into the woods. You will see a park bench. Go and have a seat here and learn about the history of Short Pump, Virginia. You will find the history beneath you! Hint: "Beneath you" doesn't necessarily mean on the ground!

Clues for Boxes #2, 3 and 4

From where you found Box #1 you must choose.
Either way, you will not lose!
Retake your seat and you will see
The remaining boxes are hidden in the trees.
To the left you will find box two and three,
Box four is to the right, hidden in a hurricane-toppled tree.

Plese be aware of Poison Ivy in the area.

Box #2

This is an easy walk; all are able.
Cross the boardwalk and observe the Red Maple.
Continue up the slight hill
In the Southern Red Oak you will find the till.

Box #3

Continue your walk from box #2
The second tree marker is the place for you.
Off the path you must go to an interesting old friend
Who is massive and tilted and hollow on one end.

Retrace your steps back to the bench.

Box #4

You began this walk past the old White Oak
Cross the footbridge, you will see no other folk.
This is hardly a park any longer
For all the development has sent that a yonder.
The Yellow Poplar is next and another bridge to cross
Keep your eye on the trail, its almost lost.
When you are about to the field, hang a quick right
And two more bridges are in sight.
A couple of big S's you will make
Through the woods like a giant snake!
Hurricanes Isabel, Ivan and Gaston tore through here
They toppled huge trees without any fear.
A large tree stump covered with lichen.
15 more steps is all you’ll be hikin’.
To your left are old friends whose roots made a knot
Together they formed the “V” that marks your spot!

Retrace your steps back to the bench.
