The Opacum Woods Letterbox is located in a conservation area owned by the Opacum Land Trust. The trail system is relatively new and the trail head sign was not fully in place as I placed this box. To get a map of the area, check the website at www.opacumlt.org.
To get to the area, from the Mass. Pike, exit at the Sturbridge exit and take exit 3B off of I84 which is the first exit you come to. From I84 take exit 3B which is the last exit before the Mass. Pike. Go west on Rt. 20 for .6 miles to New Boston Rd. Turn here. From anywhere else, New Boston Rd. is a very short distance from the intersection of Rt. 131 and Rt. 20 going east on Rt. 20.
Follow New Boston Rd. to Preserve Way, (about .3 miles). Turn here and follow to Audubon Way. Follow Audubon Way to Old Brook Circle. Follow this to the end. There is much construction in this area. Drive with care. Park at the end of Old Brook Circle. The trail system begins down the embankment here. The first trail is marked in green.
The entire walk is about 1.5 miles. It is relatively easy. Your reward will be a hand carved stamp of a salamander. If not for the salamander, this might be a golf course. Long story.
Follow the green trail. You will pass an unmarked trail on your right. Ignore it. At the Y intersection, turn right down the hill and across the bridge. Follow the Blue trail to the right. Pass a huge boulder on your left. A geo-cache is located somewhere in this area. Note the nice cave on the right. You will have a slow uphill climb and across a seasonal stream. Pass a yellow trail on your right. At the second meeting of the yellow trail, go left, staying on the blue trail. Follow this wide trail between occasional stone walls on both sides of the trail, gradually beginning to go down hill. As the trail levels, the blue trail goes to the left. Watch carefully for it, you could miss it. Stay on blue.
You will soon come to a large rock outcropping, most of which is on the right side of the trail. The letterbox is on the east side of this large rock, to the right of the rift in the rock, about chest high, behind a stone. After stamping in, continue on the blue trail. It will bring you back to the bridge you encountered earlier. A part of the trail is a bit hard to follow, but I made it through ok.
Hopefully I will have a second box on the yellow trail soon. I haven't walked it yet but will in the next week or so. Look for Jack-in-the-Box letterbox soon.
