Mayfield Peacock

Mayfield Park and Preserve located near Laguna Gloria and next to Lake Austin. There is a garden and 22 acres of wooded wildlife sanctuary. The garden is populated with peacocks and peahens.

1) Kiosk - Park in the parking lot. As you walk to the garden you will see a kiosk with information about wildlife.

2) Warning Sign - From the kiosk walk down the path to the southeast until you reach the sign that says “Mayfield Park – No Bikes or Pets”.

3) Juniper Grove - Continue southeast until you reach a path branching off to the right. You should be standing in the middle of a grove of mountain junipers or “cedar” as they are called by the locals.

4) Cactus Meadow - Continue down the path 60 paces until you reach another path to your right. In front of you there is a meadow with grasses flowers and cactus.

5) Listening Bench - Turn right, walk a short distance and at the next intersection you will find the listening bench. Sitting in this spot you may hear a great variety of birds.

6) Arching Oak - Take the path downhill to the northwest a short distance. At the next intersection to your right you will find an oak tree arching over the path.

7) Thirsty Oak - At a heading of 165 degrees from the center of this intersection, you will see the thirsty oak. It has four trunks and stretches its branches toward the lake. The Mayfield Peacock letterbox is concealed under a pile of rocks at the base of this tree.

Other Things to Do
Visit the gardens and admire the peacocks and fish living there.

Hike around the remaining 22 acres of woodland. The trail system loops around to the east and joins up with the Bell Trail which will give you a scenic walk back to the garden.

Visit Laguna Gloria which is an art museum just down the street.
