This letterbox is hidden at Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road. If you would like to download a Park Map, go to www.jcprd.com/parks_facilities/ then use the Park Maps scroll down menu, and select Shawnee Mission Park.

At the entrance to the park take Barkley Drive, which heads south, to the Dog Off Leash Area. Park in one of the parking lots, and enter the Dog Area.

If you are fortunate enough to have a dog, play for a while. When your dog is thirsty, go back toward the parking lots to the drinking fountain and give your dog a drink at the special drinking fountain just for canines. Stand behind your dog, facing the dog bowl. Walk to the tree line at your 10:00. (If you get to the bluebird nesting box, you’ve overshot about 28 paces too far north.)

Take the winding path into the woods west and slightly down-hill. It begins as a dirt trail, then becomes a little rocky.

After crossing the streambed, you will come to a fork with a trail that leads off to the north (right). Do NOT go north, but continue on the path you have been on, now heading up-hill and westerly over a more rocky trail.

As you near the top of the rise, the trail starts to level out. There will be a large cedar grove on your left (south).

Continue to follow the trail, keeping the cedar grove on your left until you get to the next fork in the trail. At this point, the trail continues straight, or you may turn left (south) into the cedar grove.

Stand in the middle of the entrance to the cedar grove, and face away from the entrance (looking NNW).

You will see an Osage Orange (Hedge Apple) tree with three main trunks. The letterbox is hidden behind the tree in a circle of rocks.

Please carefully re-seal all the baggies and the lid to the box when you are through, and re-cover it with some of the smaller rocks.

This is the first letterbox we have placed. We hope you enjoyed the journey.
