The old man at the next table finally gave up his pretense of reading the paper and leaned in closer to us. I knew I looked peeved, as I tend to, but Chufe just smiled at him.

"Dumas, you say? Ah, quite the letterboxer he was in the day. One of jackbear's students. Couldn't carve worth a darn, never seemed to learn that from the old master. For someone so good at locating other's boxes on the trail and figuring out clues, he never could get the hang of remembering where he placed them."

The old guy slid his chair away from his table, and in a quick motion I couldn't quite figure, was sitting next to me reaching for the untouched fruit left over from breakfast.

"Take his first letterbox. It's still here, in the county. He worked out an elaborate series of clues, but then wasn't patient enough. He went to plant it, all excited, and there were people nearby. So he didn't wait and just stuck it as near as he could get. Three canadians, I think he once said. Something about "Canadians" and "three." And maybe something about the mob, was it? The rackets, maybe. He tended to run on a lot, you see, and I'd tune it out. But anyway, he couldn't put it in the tree he'd planned to hide it in and had to pick another, near these Canadians and all their racket, or whatever, but south of them. Like what isn't south of Canada, right? So his clue started off with the original bit: 'There are 64 of these in New York, and 2 in Chautauqua County.' He figured that'd get people to the right place, but then he never specified anything else. He could have said 'lone hemlock' or maybe 'cedar' if that's the tree he meant, or 'waist high' or anything else. But nope, not Dumas. Just that first clue and some babble about Canadians."

NOTE: APRIL 05, 2009Box removed for cleaning and repair. Will return soon.

05/07: Apparently this is more complex than I had thought, in retrospect. First clue: Jamestown.

06/24/07: Checked the box today. Still in place, still in decent condition.
