In the early 1960s Don and his best friend John went yellowtail fishing with the Long Beach Jay Cees out of the Point Loma landing. Most of the Jay Cees were pretty green (no pun intended) when it came to sport fishing, and it certainly showed. John caught two pretty nice fish early in the day and when someone said, “Anyone for poker?”, he put his rod down and headed for the salon. Now John is a heck of a fisherman, and about the only thing he does better is play poker. Don, who also can catch a fish or two stayed at his task. Several hours went by, but Don had no luck. Just minutes before the boat headed in a fish struck and after a 10 or 15 minute battle Don landed a 39 lb Yellowtail. The biggest catch of the day.
Now there is a tradition on sport fishing boats that a pool is established for the largest fish caught. In this case Don told John as they were leaving the boat that they could split the $150 pool money. John just said, “ Heck you can keep it all, I won over $200 in the poker game.”

Don and John weren’t invited on the next Jay Cee fishing trip.

Clues:
Before searching for this letterbox you should remember that stealth is a requirement for urban letterboxes. If you are not sneaky looking for this box then it will go missing soon.

Head for the end of Shelter Island where you can find a bell. Near the Harbor Police building locate Pacific Spirit and the nearby map of the area. Double the number of the Chula Vista Marine Park listed in the legend of the Big Bay map.
Walk along the cement walkway back in the direction that you came from and count the pink uprights using the total number you got from doubling the CVMP number starting in front of the spirit. When you come to the last upright, walk 3 paces toward the water. Yes, that means you will be stepping over the chain. Try to find the rock with a blue-green dot and the letterbox will be on the left hand side under some movable rocks. (note: we saw more than one rock in the area with a blue-green dot so don’t try to short cut the clues.)
If you are having some trouble walk to a tree dedicated to Carl Bradford Saunders, then walk back to the walkway. When you reach the first cement section count that section as #1, turn left and walk to section #8, find the light pole and the pink upright just past the light pole. Walk 3 steps toward the water and the letterbox will be hidden under some movable rocks.

When researching our clues please be aware that when previous searchers list “ATTEMPTED” on the clue sheets it may reflect more on their abilities as finders than indicate whether the box is viable or not. We do monitor our clues and boxes pretty well and appreciate the notes written to us by those that find or attempt our letterboxes.
