6/19/09 -- NOTE: we haven't been out maintaining our boxes in a long time. We'd had an 11/08 report that this one was missing, but another letterboxer reports finding it intact in 4/09. So, we hope it's there, but our apologies if it's not findable, or in bad condition. -- Ace + Lox

LOCATION: Sutherland Woods in Lexington. For directions, go to your favorite mapping program (such as http://www.mapquest.com/directions), and where it asks for address or intersection, enter 1 Sutherland Rd., Lexington, MA. There is limited parking at the end of Sutherland Road.

WALK INFO: The walk will take approximately 1 hour depending on clue-solving.

STAMP: Hand drawn & carved

BRING: Compass, pen/paper for working out clues

INFORMATION: Sutherland Woods is a 25 acre property with trails that loop through some of the higher elevations in Lexington. There is also a playground at its entrance. Because of this, please note the hours it is open - one half hour before sunrise through one half hour after sunset.

CLUES:
Using the playground and the trail system, you will need to collect 8 clues. You will then be directed to a treasure map that will help you decipher these 8 clues to find the box.

Begin in the playground by finding the following clues. Record your findings accurately.

Playground Clues: (You do not need to find these in order.)

1. With strong arms and some practice, you won’t touch the floor
With a point for each bar, what’s the best one could score?

2. Take a drink! Look below your knees!
Record the letter that’s between the E’s!

3. Find the spot where the ball and bat meet.
Now, draw the shape at the catcher’s feet.

4. Brighter than a candle, and it doesn’t need a wick
See that number way up there? Write it down quick!

Now it’s time for the Trail Clues. In the corners of the basketball court are 2 trails. The one on the right leads to a nice little vernal pool area. Take the one on the left, where you’ll find the following clues. Record your findings accurately.

Trail Clues:

5. Follow the main trail. Shortly after the trail takes a hard turn to the right, you will come to gulley which may or may not have water running through it. Soon after crossing the gulley you will come to a huge boulder in the trail. Draw the shape of the boulder as you walk up to it.

6. Stay to the left of the fallen tree. You’ll pass a few little side trails before coming to where the main trail forks. Take the left, downhill fork. Watch for a pair of White Birches in the woods to the left. Find the spot on the trail where you are closest to these trees and draw the shape the trees make from this spot.

7. Continue on this trail, turning right at the T. As you walk uphill, keep an eye open for an old, weathered sign on the left. Which of the 4 primary directions (North, East, South, West) can be spelled using the letters of the longest word on this sign?

8. Continue on and notice the huge red and white structure looming in front of you. Record the shape of this structure.

Now that you have all 8 clues, you need to find the Treasure Map. Continue to follow the trail as it runs along the fencing, past a trail on the right. (This is the trail we suggest you take back to the gulley after you find the map.) Don’t go through the fence! Shortly you will see a rock on the right. Beyond that you will see 3 smaller rocks. You will find a stack of treasure maps behind the furthest rock on the right. Please be discreet as you find this.

Please take just 1 map from the box. Then, find a comfortable spot to figure out how the clues relate to the treasure map. Good luck!

After finding the Shapeshifter Letterbox and stamping in, please leave the treasure map in this box. We’ll return them to the Treasure Map box. If you want, please leave your Treasure Map “drawing” in the box as well… we wouldn’t mind seeing how yours came out!

As always, good luck!
