Planted by Slow Churned

This is the first in a series of 3, soon to be 4 boxes placed along the Metacomet Trail. These boxes were planted on November 6th by Jim, Lisa, Chris, and Matt. All of these were hand carved.(Matt, 6, is still working on his and it will be planted as soon as he finishes). They are all of apples because of our surname which means "apple" in Polish. We were initially going to plant these somewhere around Lyman Orchards, but were suprised to find that there were none on this section of the Metacomet Trail, so decided to put them here.

This section of the trail has many access points, some which seem to be much more direct than the way we went about this long and sometimes challenging loop. If you decide to take our route, or one more direct, you will be challenged physically and rewarded by some fantastic biews of Southington, Meriden, and Berlin. On many days, you will come across teams of rock climbers ascending the cliffs of Ragged Mountain as well as those facing Wassel Reservoir.

Our path starts at the parking lot on West Lane. It is a right hand turn off of Rt. 71 going south. Pass through a stop sign and continue straight until you see the parking area for Ragged Mountain Memorial Preserve.

Enter the lop and you should follow the blue blazes with the red dots torward the left. You will gradually climb through the woods for roughly 1/4 mile until you come to the first of many views along this trail. At this opening, you will see a large house off in the distance resembling Montecello. There will be a blue blaze on the rock portion of the trail. From this blaze, take a reading of 0 Degrees. Follow this course for 15 steps soward a large oak tree. From this tree, take a reading of 110 Degrees, take 4 steps toward a large rock. The Golden Delicious stamp is located under this rock.

After returning the box, continue on the Blue Blazed red dot trail heading south on the way to the next box in our series. You will continue along the outer ridge and experience some fantastic views and pass by interesting rock formations.

Eventually, the trail will combine with the Metacomet Trail and will now be marked with only blue blazes. You will be hiking primarily north until the trail turns toward the west. You will proceed down then up a rocky section of the trail. After cresting this rocky incline, continue roughly 50 yards and you will see an Oak tree on the right side of the trail with three trunks. Looking westward, you will see a large rock marked with a blue blaze. You will find Chris' Red Delicious stamp under the northern side of this rock.

Log in with your stamp, then continue along the trail until you come to the cliffs at the summit of Ragged Mountain facing 310 Degrees. You will now overlook the Wassel Reservoir and might be lucky enough to watch climbers ascend the cliffs. Continue along the cliff trail and just as the trail veers from the cliffs, you will see a small grove of evergreen trees. You will find Lisa's Macintosh stamp under a rock in this grove on the left side of the trail.

Continue northbound along this trail which will be blue blazed. You can turn right and follow a trail which is marked black and white or continue on a little further and turn right on the greed dot trail and find your way back to the West Street parking lot.

Be sure to leave plenty of time for this hike as some of the inner loop conection trails are not marked very clearly. There is also a parking lot that is near the Wassell Reservoire in Southington, and a trail that leads up to the cliffs of the Ragged Mountain. This approach may take significantly less timeand would start with an ascent of the rock stairway. Take a right onto the Metacomet trail and find the Macintosh letterbox first on your right hand side.
