****Sadly, this is missing*****

This is a special box. It was originally carved by Don & Gwen for the Gold Rush Romp (GRR). They were unable to attend and I agreed to plant this box on their behalf.

Unfortunately, my father passed away very unexpectedly and we were unable to plant for or attend the GRR. I had emailed a bit with Don and he and my father had several things in common. I asked Don if he would like me to get a neighbor to go into my home and retrieve the box (would that count as a find?) and mail it to someone who could plant it for them. Don kindly offered for me to keep the box and plant it somewhere in memory of my Dad.

So Don – I finally got around to doing this. We tried to pick a location that fit your fantastic carving.

My Dad was an authentic, learned and loyal man – much like I suspect Don to be. I hope you enjoy the box and your day in the Preserve.

The Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve is part of the East Bay Regional Park District. There is a $4 entrance fee on weekends.

Directions:
From California Hwy. 4, take the Somersville Road exit. Go south on Somersville Road to the park entrance. Continue to the end of the road and park in the lot.

After parking head towards the Visitor’s Center and take the path that leads to the Hazel-Atlas Portal. Climb uphill and pass a sand dune and stack of logs. Remain on the road continuing uphill on the gravel, past the trail sign reading “Hazel-Atlas Portal Pittsburgh Mines.” On your left you will find a wall of railroad ties beneath some tracks to nowhere. About 12 steps north of the railroad tie wall is a mossy, concrete support fragment. Homage to the Past lies beneath.
