Peace...in Norwegian, Swedish and Danish!
Glastonbury, CT
NOTE: This adventure is about a mile long. Though unmarked, the trails are generally easy to walk, with a fairly good size hill to climb. Today's adventure will take you through a very "magical" stretch of state forest! Wear orange during hunting season. Also, wherever you letterbox, be aware of your surroundings. Be careful reaching in to places. Reptiles do inhabit the region. This is the same starting point as the "Peace...in Spanish and Portuguese" letterbox. As you meander through this special place, please don't disturb the landscape. There may be historical and cultural value here.

From route 2, take the exit for route 83. Once you reach the end of the off ramp, turn onto rte 83 north. After about 0.6 miles, turn right on Forest Lane. Drive along for roughly 1.9 miles until you spot "Al" lurking by the side of the road. Careful...he looks hungry! Continue up the winding road for 0.2 more miles until you come to a small gravelly parking area on the right. Stop here. By the way, this happens to be the exact point where the road turns to dirt. You'll know you are in the correct spot if you see a couple of "State Land" signs nailed to a tree that looks like it had been a snack for a beaver.

Cross Forest Lane and pass between the stone entry markers. Follow the wide path at roughly 75 degrees past a small farm on the right. You will soon walk between 2 large boulders. As you approach, notice the curious mounds of stone in the woods around you. Anyway, from the "bookend boulders", take about 45 steps to an intersection. Go right. Take 12 more steps to another intersection. Bear left here. Pass a ring of quartzlike rocks on the left. Continue along, walking between another pair of stones. Soon you will come to another intersection in front of a rocky hillside. Go left? Nope. Go right? Nope. Go straight on a narrow path up the hill. Walk past a zig-zag tree on the left. From here the trail bends left. After a few moments you come to a series of small overlooks. WATCH on the right side of the trail for a tree that forms a terrific bench then bends upward. It is to the right of a mossy flat rock on the trail. From the middle upward branch, spot a small ledge at about 45 degrees. Walk 27 steps in that direction. Look in the ledge next to a dead tree and a couple of live ones for your prize. Please rehide very carefully. It is hidden under bark and leaves mostly.

Go back the way you came to return to your car. If you have the time, explore a bit more. This forest seems to have a lot of surprises.

I hope you enjoyed this letterboxing adventure! Spread the word!
