Peace...in Egyptian!
Glastonbury, CT

NOTE: This adventure is about 1.25 miles long. Most of the hiking will be done along lumber roads. Though unmarked, these wide trails are generally easy to walk, with one fairly gradual hill to scale. You will be exploring a fairly remote portion of Glastonbury. Be on the watch for mountain bikers and possible ATV vehicles since this is a state forest! Wear orange during hunting season. Also, wherever you letterbox, be aware of your surroundings. Be careful reaching in to places. Reptiles do inhabit the region. Have fun here... don't forget other boxes hidden in the area.

From route 2, take the exit for route 83. Once you reach the end of the off ramp, turn onto rte 83 north. After about 0.6 miles, turn right on Forest Lane. Drive along for roughly 1.9 miles until you come to "Smiling Al". Continue along the winding road for 0.6 more miles. As you drive the road will turn to dirt. Continue downhill until you come to a fenced in area on the left with young pines. Just across from a large log by the left side of the road you should see a tree with 2 diamond shaped orange signs that inform you that this is a state forest. Park by the silver gate on the right side of Forest Lane. By the way, this happens to be the exact point where the dirt road becomes paved again.

Walk around the silver gate. Follow the logging road at 160 degrees. Pass by a field on the left. The road then meanders between 2 rocky hills and enters a birch forest area. After you've been hiking for about 5 minutes you'll come to three yellow canes. Standing at the 3rd cane, take a reading of 58 degrees. Follow a trail in that direction uphill. As you climb keep your eyes open for the ragged remains of a stone wall on the left. At this point, on the right side is a rectangular stone. About 48 steps further on you'll come to a path on the right. Go past it. (It leads to private property.) Almost immediately after that you'll pass a trail coming in from the left. A short ways after that, you'll discover a wide junction. Blue blazes abound! Turn left here onto the blue trail. Stop at the second tree you come to with a blaze on it. Take 9 steps at 233 degrees. Look under a small collection of stones behind a tree that has seen better days! There you will find the "Peace...in Egyptian" letterbox. Once you have stamped in and rehidden the letterbox, simply return the same way you came in.

NOTE: Many languages of the world utilize different lettering systems than we do. I have tried to give a "Hooked on Phoenics" approach to help visitors pronounce the words.

I hope you enjoyed this awesome spot! "Spread the word!"
